PIDGEN, Charles David

TelfordMoz

Brummie babby
Charles David Pidgen 1902 - 1979 Born at New Bradwell, Buckinghamshire, but later moved to B'ham with his family. When he was a child (about 9 y.o.a.) he was playing at Hamstead Colliery, Perry Barr, when he was involved in accident. It is thought that he got tangled up with the large buckets that brought the coal out of the pit. He lost one arm and the lower part of his other arm. Despite this, Charlie was an accomplished billiard & snooker player later in life and gave demonstration matches in local clubs. He was living at 26 Rifle Crescent, Lozelles, when he died. It is thought that his accident happened about 1911. Can anyone shed any light on this, please?

Re: Charles David Pidgen

Found this article on findmypast in the Hull Daily Mail dated 29/7/1908

A BOYS ARMS TORN OFF

Hamstead Colliery, where a number of miners were entombed a few months ago, was yesterday the scene of a terrible accident to a child named Charles Pidgeon aged 6. The boy became entangled in the rope which hauls the tubs of coal to the surface, and before he could be extricated his right arm and shoulder-blade were torn from the body, and he sustained other injuries. He was removed to hospital at West Bromwich, where it was found necessary to amputate his remaining arm.

Re: Charles David Pidgen

Shera,

That's brilliant.

All the details are as we thought, With the exception of the date. The press extract that you have posted puts it a few years earlier than we thought and with a clear date.

Many thanks for your help.
