To any one who's interested the building to the right-hand edge of the Villa St pic is a factory know as Driver Southall Ltd they manufactured weighing machines for the food industry. I served my apprenticeship here from 1968 to 1973.

The copyright statement - https://www.oldukphotos.com/copyright_statement.htm - makes it clear that

By donating your images, you are deemed to be in full agreement that any of your images that we later offer for publication in whichever form we decide has your full approval and authority. No images from this website may be reproduced without the express permission of the webmaster.

In other words - the anonymous owners of the site can have your donated pictures free of copyright and then impose their own copyright on your pictures and then make money out of them if they want to!

Fortunately they have hardly any pictures of Birmingham - and long may it remain so.

I'm a little confused about this site. Obviously i agree entirely with you, but, looking at it , many of the Birmingham pictures seem to be old postcards, some over 100 years old. I don't see how the site can claim copyright just because someone has scanned in a picture and sent it in. Going by the links, the site seems to have american commercial origins (ie link to ancestry, but highlightng american census records) and is not very knowledgeable (it states 1911 census will be released in 1912). Altogether a site to be avoided even without the dubious copyright issues

Thank you, Bill, for the 2nd link. As I am researching the Birmingham of my GGGGrandparents & reading the books of the period this is very helpfull. Mike, I agree with you regarding the copyright issues.

Bill I have seen these on Ebay as well. Some photo's looked as thought they had been copied from ones held at central library........this makes me angry!!

I thought that pictures over 50 years old are out of copyright or maybe that applies to newspaper photo's only. Anyway that possibly should be the case. What is the value of such without being used in an article or an information post...they will just sit there doing nothing. None of them are of any value on their own I would have thought and how many thousands of people would be interested in a history of The Gate Saltley or Deritend or such. Just a few of us...one would hardly think a commercial venture...I think it would be tough sledding.
