Hi Lyn, yes it is Steelhouse Lane. I suppose the bomb damage in the pic was not severe and was soon repaired. I've just looked at a 1949 aerial view and Jeans Cafe is there and the shop blind is extended so both look open for business.

ok thanks phil....yes it looks like the damage to the juvenile and coroners courts were not so bad unlike other areas...still looking for anymore photos folks...thanks

I don't know if these are any use to you, but it's all I can come up with at the moment.

I think they were the Court administration offices and I think there might have been police offices there as well. I remember after the buildings were rebuilt there was a department where divorced & separated wives collected their weekly maintenance amount that the courts had ordered their husbands pay in.

thanks phil just a little confused because both pics show the corner of steelhouse lane and newton st but they look to be 2 different buildings..or is that steelhouse lane running across in pic 2 so making the building on the opposite corner to pic 1

In Pic 1 you are looking down Newton Street toward Steelhouse Lane. The corner building is the Coroners Court. In Pic 2 you are looking at the Steelhouse Lane corner of Newton Street from Steelhouse Lane opposite the Coroners Court.

got it phil...as i thought...just one last thing...would you know if the building in pic 2 is or was (not sure if its still there) anything to do with the police or the courts...thanks phil

Hi Lyn,
The building in photo 2 was the police headquarters. The entrance is just visible in the picture. It could also be entered via the Victoria Law Courts but you needed to know the route to do so. I worked there for a spell during my police service. When the headquarters
moved across to Lloyd House the building was taken over by the law courts. It is still there.

I have no idea what they are used for now, except the Corporation Street end still might be the fines & fees Department.

Hi Lyn,
Yes. I have amended the post. If I remember right (I was not there) a police inspector was killed when Newton Street was struck.

Lyn - I am a bit confused. On the maps the building seems the same shape from when the law courts first appear on the 1905 map to the present day. Could it be that the police station just closed but the building remained? Sorry to be dense but just trying to get things clear (I think your Smiths - on the other thread - have addled my brain!!)

hi janice...at the time of the map the law courts were not finished..they now butt right up to the corner of newton st taking over the old police buildings marked on the map ..those buildings are no longer there. well i think thats correct....ps the smiths have addled my brain as well lol.

It was just that I was looking at later maps and to me the outline was the same. However, I am sure you are right. I also thought the courts were finished in 1891.

OK - I just thought the Police Station was absorbed into the courts building as it was already connected. It just shows you learn something new every day. It was still a police station on the 1917 map so when do you think it was demolished?

Hi All,
I have just checked the history of Steelhouse Lane Police Station. It was opened in 1933 on the site of an old Victorian Police Station. In fact the whole of that side of Steelhouse Lane was taken up by the Police Headquarters, which obviously included the old station, as far as Newton Street. The Police Headquarters remained, seperated from Steelhouse Lane Police Station by Coleridge Passage.
