photo storage

I`d appreciate some advice on the best way to store photos to keep them in good condition. I have a few old ones and also some new copies of old photos which I`ve been given by relatives.

I`m hoping for a solution that doesn`t cost a fortune! I`ve looked at proper archive quality storage but it seems very pricey. Ideally I`d like to be able to display them in some sort of album.

Jane,
I would try and scan them and store them on computer/disc, if you have the negatives they are usually in better condition than photos, but you will need a dedicated negative/slide scanner. There are a number of photo album programmes, most of which allow some form of editing. I use Picasa, and photoshop for more extensive editing. I have just finished scanning over 7000 old 35mm negatives, although I've only saved about 3500, and with a bit of tweaking, some are even better than the original photo. You will also have the facility to print off all the photos you need.
Picasa is a free programme and can be downloaded from a number of sites

You can get archive quality sleeves (A4 Ring Binder size with dirfferent sized pockets. This way they can be seen but will not be subject to acid attack from paper.

Colin - thanks - I hadn`t heard of Picasa - I`ll take a look at it
Bernie - thanks - can you advise where is a good place to buy these sleeves?

Both of you - apologies for delay in replying to you - have only just had an email notifying me of your replies
