Hi John - Thats me that posted on the 1861 Census. Just trying to piece together my PHILLIPS family.

Mtnclmr

PHILLIPS surname seems to be very common in Birmingham.

I have a Peter Phillips married to Rebecca Whyley/Wylie/Wiley in 1821 in West Bromwich area. Their children were:-

William [ no birth record but shows up on census]
John 1823 Taylors Lane, West Bromwich.[presumably died as infant]
Paul 1824 Lyne W.B.
John 1826 Lyne W.B.[my ancestor]
Thomas 1830 Lyne W.B.
Harriet 1833 Lyne W.B.
Peter 1836 Lyne W.B.
Harriet 1836
Rebecca 1840 Bratt Street W.B.

Peter snr. was a bolt maker and Rebecca snr. died in 1848

JOHN PHILLIPS married Maria Bettridge in 1853 at Edgsbaston
Their children were:-
George Bettridge 1854 Handsworth [went to USA]
Hannah Bettridge 1856 Handsworth [my g.grandmother went to Australia]
Joseph Bettridge 1859 West Bromwich Thomas Street
Maude Miranda 1862 Handsworth Connection Street [a cripple]

John died in 1871 in Chapel Street Handsworth and Maria married Jesse Golsby. She died in 1882 in Chapel Street Handsworth.

I have traced back from Peter Phillips and it appears that the family were in the area in the 1700's.
Does anyone know what Lyne means or know anything about it?

Joan,
Do you know Peter's PHILLIPS who married Rebecca in 1821 parents names? I wonder if Peter's parents were JOHN and CATHERINE PHILLIPS who attended St Phillip's of Birmingham?

Siblings:
James 1782
Jeremiah 1783
John 1785
Mary Catherine 1789
Peter Benjamin 1797

My PHILLIPS family are from West Bromwich. I noticed on the IGI that Peter and Rebecca attended the same church during the same time my family was there. They are Jarvis and Ellen Phillips.

Dave - aka mtnclmr

Dave, it was great to hear from you so quickly. I am sure that we must be remotely connected, but how?
I searched for my Peter's parents using IGI and also going through reels of ghastly microfilm ordered in from the LDS.

I came up with 2 possibles.
One was your Peter Benjamin 1799[you have 1797] His siblings were John 1785, Mary Elizabeth 1789. Maybe they aren't the same family but the parents are John and Catherine Taylor and the place was St Phillips. You have extra children which I maybe missed .

The second Peter which I considered to be the correct one, but maybe not, came from Paul Phillips born 1758 [parents Richard and Anna] and Jane Stephens. Siblings were Anne 1787, Benjamin1788, Robert 1790, Catherine 1791,Richard 1792, Paul 1794, Maryanne 1796, Peter 1797, Jane and Richard 1801. This was all West Bromwich.

Then I looked for Richard and Anna and found them in W B. with children Hannah 1747, Benjamin 1749, Robert 1751, RICHARD and Paul 1753, Peter 1762.

To add to the confusion I also found in WB a Richard and Catherine Wassal with Nancy and Hannah 1747, Benjamin 1749, Robert and Richard 1751, Richard 1756, Paul 1758, Peter 1762.

For your interest I also found JOHN Phillips[no wife named] in WB with Sarah 1736, Robert 1738, Mary 1742, John 1744, Richard 1746, Thomas 1748, Anne 1752.

There is also a John and Sarah at WB with Sarah 1769, John 1774, Mary 1776, Benjamin 1780, Hannah 1783, William 1782, Lucy 1786, David 1788.
The names used indicate that there must have been connections but how to sort them out. I hope that you have fun with all this. maybe you have more to add to the plot. Incidently, the Phillips seemed to live in the poor area of WB and many worked in the steel mills.
Joan.

Joan,

I would agree with your second option. Peter's parents were Paul and Jane, All Saints, WB.

I know Jarvis PHILLIPS worked for the gas company near Swan Village for years and died in 1847 of TB.

Have you sent away or requested a COPY SERVICE? It doesn't cost much and you get a copy of the original registry (christening/ death). It provides name/address/occupation

I have additional information regarding John and Catherine of Warwick. Their children James 1782, Jeremiah 1783, John 1785, Mary Catherine 1789 are from the IGI Batch No. CO41792 dated 1780-1789.
The reason I thought they had more children is because the witnesses at Mary Catherine's (Richard Powell) wedding of 1813 St Martin, Warwick were a John and Peter PHILLIPS. So if you look at the IGI Batch No. CO41793 dated 1791-1803 a Peter Benjamin PHILLIPS appears whose parents are John and Catherine PHILLIPS.

The reason why this family is of interest to me is because my GGGG father Jarvis PHILLIPS was married in St Martin 1828 to Helen Perry and one of the witnesses was Richard Powell. I know that Jarvis was from the Stroke-on-Trend area and his family did not attend his wedding. Mary Catherine was probably a Aunt or Cousin to him.

Dave

Dave, I have never heard of the copy service. Could you please tell me exactly what it is, and any other details?
When I went through the WB church record LDS films, which took months to read [sometimes impossible to decipher] I took down all the Phillips entries as I had at that time, no idea of which ones were my family.
I checked them again and found reference to your lot. You probably already know the information already. Anyway, I found :-

Jarvis 's second name was Bentley which could have been his mother's maiden name.
1850 George Phillips of Swan Village died 24th March aged 10 months.[no parents mentioned]
1830 Anne, daughter of Jarvase and Ellen , baptised. Hilltop.
1839 Ellen Elizabeth daughter of Gervace [gasman] and Ellen baptised. Swan Village.
1835 Joel son of William and Maryanne Phillips, Hill Top, sawyer. Relative?
1835 Helen daughter of John and Elizabeth Phillips, Hill Top, sawyer Relative?
1821 James son of William and Maryanne, Hilltop, baptised.
1820 July 15th, Jane, daughter of Jervase and Helen[Ellen?] Dartmouth. This could be Dartmouth Lane or a place, it was hard to read.
I noticed that there were Whileys at Swan Village also.

Have you found Gervases parents or siblings? [his name is spelt many ways!] I suppose you have looked at the census on Ancestry.
I found my g.grandmother's brother george in England , married with a child, then he is remarried and disappeared by 1891. Then I found that a relative of his kept the child in UK and he and new wife went to USA. George was a jeweller. There were 4 children born in USA, wife died and George ended up in a paupers home. It is great that Ancestry will track down people who left UK.

Joan.

Joan,

The email attachment should take you there. Ask for a copy request. The cost if very nominal and they are very helpful. You have to make sure you have all the dates of the event you are looking for (Baptism, Marriage and Death)

"Staffordshire Record Office" <staffordshire.record.office@staffordshire.gov.uk>

If you want copies for the Birmingham area the email address is below. They cost about 3.00 pound each.

The information you sent was very interesting. Jarvis/Gervase died in 1847 and a William PHILLIPS was there as a witness. He signed his name with a X mark. How interesting that William and John both lived in Swan Village and were both sawyers (lumberjacks). I'm sure they are related to me somehow. I know that on the death certificate of Javis they put his occupation as a sawyer after being a gasman for a long time.

According to the IGI Jarvis was born in Bucknall Cum Bagnall in 1800. This is the only Jarvis I can find in that time period. On his death certificate they wrote 1801. Born in Staffordshire. His parents were Simon and Jane PHILLIPS. Again Jarvis named his oldest child Jane.

Can I ask how you found the name BENTLEY?? I have only seen it twice. One on a marriage certificate of his son William Jarvis PHILLIPS of 1853 and his daughter that was born in 1847 Mary Bentley PHILLIPS.

Dave

Can anyone look up a Death Certificate for Simon/Simeon PHILLIPS

Stoke-on-Trent Dec 1846 vol 17 page 126

Thanks Dave

Dave, thanks for links.
I found the info about Bently on LDS reel for WB BDM's. I have written a number 350 on the top of my recorded information but the receipt number with reel number, which I had pinned to it, was missing. Sorry. If you check out the WB BDM reels available you should be able to locate it by the dates. It is ghastly to read!

I found some new information regarding my PHILLIPS family and I was wondering if someone could validate it for me??

name: Jervis Phillips
residence: Stone, Staffordshire
christened date: 1801 St. Michael's, Stone, Stafford
father: John
mother: Jane

Thank you - Dave

Only one Jervis Phillips in the right age range in the 1841 census, in Grove Street, Shelton, Stoke on Trent. (The road is still there.)
Jervis Phillips, age 45.
Julia Phillips, age 40
Eliza Phillips, age 5
Jervis Phillips, age 2

A Jervis Phillips married a Martha Smith in Ashbourne, Staffordshire/Derbyshire in 1st quarter of 1864, young Jervis above would have been 25 then.

Hi Lloyd,

Thanks for the reply. I know that my Jarvis died in 1847 in West Bromwich. I guess I wanted to know if there was any record of the Jarvis being born in 1801 Stone, Stafford??

Dave

I'll bet it's the elder one in the census above. It's not unusual for christenings not to be done at birth, often several siblings were done together. Birth registration was not mandatory before 1837, so it's unlikely you will find records of his birth.
