On a visit to Heath Lane Cemetery in West Bromwich today I was touched by this memorial, and thought you might like to see it.

A lovely memorial Wendy, thank you for the photographs. Though the workhouse system had many faults we have to be mindful that it was all that was available at the time for the poor and homeless. Without the workhouses many would have starved or died of the cold.

thanks for the pics wend..its nice to know that this memorial will serve as a reminder of when days were rough for folk but as already said by john it was all there was available at the time and far better than nothing at all...

Indeed a touching memorial to those families scarred by the evil workhouse system.

The 'Workhouse' system had many faults, but its alternative might have been a greater evil still...

My parents, and other family, are buried not far from the the memorial.

John I think most of us who do family history will find people in the workhouse but as you say the alternative would be much worse! I thought the memorial was a nice touch for somewhere families can visit and leave a token if wished.
