Hi all
I am looking for info about where my father, Arthur Parker lived.
He was born at 83 Great Russell Street but I can't find this street on any map. I did a search for this address a few years ago and found a printing service there, but now, nothing.
Does anyone know of this place or even better, but more unlikely, have any relatives that used to live near there and possibly knew my father's family.
Regards
Sheila

Shiela i'm sure our resident map expert will get you a map, but if you type the street name into the search bar at the top there is lots about the street on this site, my family lived there in the 1930's-50's it was in Newtown

Great Russell St was the continuation south from the Farm St of Lennox st . that part of Farm St no longer exists, but if you were to continue the present Lennox st from where it meets Guthrie Close, then this would be approximately where the street was. I attach a map from around 1913, and have marked where I think no 83 was in red. It was certainly either that or one of the houses either side, but I think that is most likely. It seems to have been inhabited by a coal dealer for a long time and there seems to be a yard next door, whichn may have been where the coal was stored.

I think my Nan lived in 82. She had a grocers shop and opposite lived in the drapers shop. I had a honorary "Uncle" at the Justice pub

Hi. Thank you all for the info.
I would be interested to learn more about the coal merchant and the shops there, I have vague recollections of my father mentioning a grocers next door. Thanks for the map Mike.

my grandad Samuel was born at 208 great russell street in 1908, anyone recognise Ernest and Leah Smith? Ernest was a master fruiterer :)

if you type in gt russedlstreet in the search box top right of the page there is a thread for this street..plenty of pics and i think there should be one of the justice...

lyn:):)

That shop wasn't a grocers it was owned by my Nan Mrs Jones and was a draperers, with living accom at the back where she lived, The grocers was opposite which she owned. If you visit the Gt russell st Thread then the pic of the Justice must have been taken from the step of the grocers.

The Albeert Jones was my step grandad. My nan Eliz Crowe married a second time. Albert had 3 grown up kids and my nan had 3 grown up and three children, so were quite a family. That drapers was the family house where at Xmas we all met for the party, mom and dad. my brother and I coming in from Gt Barr.

Hi, my nan lived opposite mrs jones shop, they were the davis,s then a few entrys away my aunti lived there name was caswells, i wonder if anyone remembers a big house fire in this street were 3 babies died and my uncle charlie who tried to save the babies all died, my mom often talked about this fire, it was next door to my nan and they were relations of ours,

It has just come to mind i am sure mrs Jones had a grandaughter name pearl,
How brilliant this site is. First Pearl is the daughter of Mary Jones and Bill de Roach who later moved to Chain Walk off Lozells. Pearl is my Step Cousin.
Mrs Jones had married twice. First to Michael crowe with whom she had 6 children, four of who are still with us. I am the son of Lilian who died 2002.
When mrs Crowe became Mrs Jones she gained 3 stepchildren ( all grown) Albert, Fred, Mary.
That is Nan's shop thank you so much:D. I remember the Caswells and Jimmy(?) took me in his car once I think.
I will telol the family of these postings.

yes pearl de roach i remember her really well, Mrs Jones was so lovely to us kids, she always had time for us all, uncle jimmy sadly passed away about 3 years ago, but my aunty joyce caswell still going strong, my name is christine devlin, i dont know if any of your family would remember me, there were loads of us, i can throw you loads of names if you wish me too, lindev
