Park Road Sutton Coldfield

Hello
We have a death certificate for a William Kindon who died at Denmark Villa(Im sure thats the name of the villa but could be wrong) in 1902.
Only one side of the road now has the old style houses, the other side has newer style appartments most likely built sometime in the 70s. Can anyone remember or know of the older house on the stretch going from the back of shopping parade down to Town Gate Sutton Park.

Hi Adele

Looked on the 1901 census and found Denmark House, at that time it was occupied by Arthur and Julia Dawson. It was located on the north side of Park Rd, i think that section has a church built on it now. I have put two maps on here and you will see the old map shows Park Rd running from the left of map, across Clifton Rd, under the railway and the bends to the junction with Station St and i think Denmark Villa was on the north side in this section. If you look at the modern map, Park Rd now ends just after coming under the railway and i think the building there now is a church.

According to the census i think they started at the Station Rd end of Park Rd, there was about ten houses before Denmark and then three houses later was Park Ave but that old map is not very clear so can't pick that out but it may have been just where Park Rd now ends

What a star, ive got to say this history furum is brilliant. Only found it a while back and ive had so much help from members.
I would never have thought of looking at the 1901 census, but im learning and will remember that. So it was a private house then, ive got to research but im sure ive read that surname before so it could have been a relative. William was quite a character we think hed been married 3 times by the time of his death.
Many thanks again.

The Congegational Church was in Park Road in 1958. two of my sons were baptised there.....one in 1959 and the other in 1961.

The church was on the left hand side going up Park Road towards the town.

Here is a (slightly improved version) photo from a Facebook group devoted to identifying photographs. It was identified as being a cafe at 89,91 Park Road Sutton Coldfield. The Kellys of 1928 (around the period of the photo by the look of it) gives that as the Park Cafe, run by Mrs Harriet Wilson.

Hi Adele
I've just come across your entry from some while ago regarding Park Road ; the older style houses you mention on the south side of the road
were demolished in October of 1963 to make way for what is now Garrard Gardens which you refer to as the newer style apartments, build soon after, roughly 1964/65. The top end of Park Road was demolished and made slightly shorter, to make way for the north end of what became the Gracechurch Centre round about 1969/70 ; The Museum Pub on the corner was also demolished 1971 along with the ABC Cinema opposite.
