Hi all, me again...

Just a query about parish records. Ive followed a family through the census info back down to 1841... Obviously the 1841 census rounds up ages, but i have a birthplace for my chap (ok its John Smith but bear with me)

How do i go about researching further back? Id like to know who his mum and dad were and who their mum and dad were. Is it a case of checking parish records where he was living or where he was born? Or both?

What if they weren't from the parish? Will the records give details of where the person is from?

Oh those crazy Smiths :explode:

I think your first step is to apply for his marriage certificate .
This should give the name of his Father, therefore narrowing down your Search on the I.G.I.
Does your relative have any siblings living with him on the 1851 ?
It is not always a case of working backwards , but sideways too.

1841 Census does not state relationships and bear in mind that often people would bend the truth when asked where they were born , some would state that they were from the parish they were living in at that time for fear being ill and out of work , therefore being sent back to the parish they were born in to claim parish relief.

Perhaps if you list his name, age , where from and who he married , other's may be able to help you.

Bo
