hi
i am new to the site - i am interested in the census data of 48 selly wick road b297jb, between 1913 when it was built until more recently
thank you for any help received :)

Welcome to the forum.
There are no published censuses after 1911. The release of 1921 next year is eagerly awaited.
There are some electoral rolls online and I am sure someone will look for you.

From the search results looks like there's a Walter Frank & Cecilia Higgs there in 1930 & 1935 and possibly 1927.

Search results are not always clear though.

Thanks - that helped. Have now found them on 1927 and 1935.
Also Walter Frank Higgs is on 1920 e roll but listed at Boscobel, Selly Wick Road - I think from Kelly's it looks as if the houses had names not numbers back then.
1915 Kelly's lists a Mrs Higgs at Boscobel. No entry 1913. So it is likely the Higgs were the first occupants.

Walter Higgs and Cecelia are on 1939 register at Nuthurst Grange Hockley Heath and he is listed as

so it is quite likely they could afford to have the house in Selly Wick Road built.
By 1939 the Mealings are on the 1939 reg at 48 Selly Wick Road

thank you for the information
i have found the below about Walter Higgs. it will be nice to know who owned the property after Mr Higgs, and further owners until 2000...

Walter Frank Higgs (7 April 1886 – 8 August 1961)[1] was a Conservative Party politician in England.

He was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Birmingham West at a by-election in 1937 following the death of the Conservative MP Sir Austen Chamberlain. At the 1945 general election, he was defeated by the Labour Party candidate, Charles Simmons.[2] In addition he took a keen interest in both local and national politics, serving on Birmingham City Council from 1934 and 1937.

Walter Frank Higgs was born at Kidderminster on April 7, 1886. He was educated at Birmingham Technical School, and then went into the electrical industry, gaining experience with the General Electric Company, the British Thomson-Houston Company, the Electric Construction Company, and others.[3]

In 1912, Walter Higgs and his brother founded a small company in Witton Birmingham to manufacture electric motors. This concern he built up from employing seven workers in 1912 to over 1,500 in 1962 when the firm moved to Yate, Bristol as part of Newman Industries.[4] He was a member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers and a life governor of Birmingham University.

I am trying to piece together the list of owners to understand the journey of the property to date :)
thank you all again for your help and suggestions for further avenues of searches

Now I see why your name is "Boscobel". All the erolls are in Birmingham library but you need to visit (when the archives are open) and look up the address in the books. Not all years are digitised.

thank you Janice - if i were to try and find out about the Mealings or the Matthews, would that be the best option?
i have managed to find that the next owners Ian and J Saxby were in the property from 1981 and he was the first GM of Cadbury World...
the house has some beautiful features that seem to have been done at a significant expense - hence the journey of discovery to see who was responsible :)

Could be a good idea. To find out more recent inhabitants you need to e rolls n the library.
Richard Mealings was an architect.

Interestingly both the Mealings and the Matthews families were living in Selly Wick Road at the time of the 1939 register. Richard and Netta Mealings at no. 48 and Leslie and Laura Matthews at no. 20.
As Janice mentioned Richard Frederick Mealings (1904-1996) was an architect. With Netta he was on the electoral register at 73 Eastern Rd, Selly Oak in 1930 and 1931. When Netta died in 1991 they were living in Wellington Rd, Edgbaston.
Leslie Noel Matthews (1896-1983) was listed as a motor agent in the 1939 register. I wonder whether he could have been the proprietor of Leslie Matthews Ltd, a motor sales business established in 1922. They advertised widely in the Birmingham newspapers throughout the 30s, 40s & 50s and the latest advert I have found was 1965. The company started at 26/27 Bellbarn Rd, then 717 Pershore Rd and later at 91-97 Bristol Street.
