Our Moms

Charlie

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
I've been meaning to post this photograph for some time. Takes me a while to get round to things!
The story: Some time last year I was browsing the BHWR "Brookfields" site and came across a post from someone who's family had lived in Camden Drive, where my family had also lived. I emailed him and the upshot was that his mom and my mom used to be best friends and neighbours. He then sent me this photo of our mothers playing the fool and pretending to be young men. I was thrilled to bits, I had only one photo of my mom pre marriage, so this was very exciting for me. He'd always thought it was a photo of two unknown young men, til he asked his elderly aunt about my family. We met later in the year, walked down Camden Drive and tried to recreate the picture! We still keep in touch to go walking around the "Old End".
My mom (Claire Chapman) is the taller of the two - and no, she didn't smoke!

Charlie, that's a great story and I would have been fooled by the photo
thinking that these were men.:) It's smashing that you were able to connect with someone who knew your parents and be able to go back down memory lane with them.

I am wondering if this cross dressing for fun was something that was popular in the late 1920's early 30's. I have some photos of a group my Mother went on holiday with to the Isle of Man and about nine or ten of the men in one photo are dressed as women and another photo has the women dressed as men. They are standing in the sea and much laughter is going on.:D
I'll have to look the pics out and post them.

what a nice story

my mom was a big one for fashion,
in the early years, but saying that
a lot of the time she had a turbun on
and a fag in her mouth.
i,ve uploaded a photo of her and

happy days regards dereklcg. ;)

photo's

Thank goodness for photographs..........Cat:)

never never throw family photo's away i was adopted and lost contact with my adopted parent's but not so long ago found out i have 5 brothers and one sister by my birth father to cut along story short i did not have any photo's of my birth mother and when my birth father passed away the few photo's of my mother were disgarded my beloved mother died in 1953 so never never

brian:(

You're right of course, Brian. When my dad died in 1970 I had to get the house cleared quickly. There was an awful lot of stuff in the 'glory hole' under the stairs, old newspapers, junk and mice! I got a firm in to do a clearance and they emptied it all out (the starving mice had probably done a runner by then) including the 'glory hole'. I was in my twenties at the time and had two young children - I just wanted everything gone! Now I realise a lot of old photos and memories probably went away in black bags. I vaguely remember one of my dad with his mother and now, oh how I wish....................

'Cause that's what it was Cat, a hole full of glory:)

Just about the most useful room you can have, I wish I had one now.

Charlie,
What a find! What I wouldn't give to make a connection like this one of course I may be a decade or more too late for that, but still-what a special special find!

Yes indeed, a special special find. It was days before I could wipe the stupid grin off my face, and sometimes tears. My parents separated when I was eight and I lived with my dad and gran after that, so..it was specially special!
Jack and I went down Camden Drive to re-create the photo and couldn't help wondering if our moms were looking down on us and thinking "Silly s*ds".
No - I think they would have been chuffed that we'd contacted each other.

Will do me best Di., here goes:MomandfriendClarachapmancamdendrive1928.jpg Sorry I missed the previous request, thanks for giving me a shout!
