Onions (Samuel Isaac and Florence May)

Hi

My great grandmothers father on her marriage certificate is shown as Samuel Isaac Onions (b 1879)and their address as 173 Court Oak Road, Harborne. I can see he is shown on the electoral roll in 1920 to 1925 although Samuel is on his own. Assuem his wife Florence May (B 1882)had died.

I cant find any trace of their marriage and in 1920 on the electoral roll they are shown as "Foster" then in 1922 as Onions.

My great grandmother is shown on my grandfathers birth certificate as Lily Mansell (b. 1903) formerly Onions otherwise Foster.

Can anyone help me understand if her maiden name was Onions or Foster?

Somewhere along the way, i think Lily may have had a sister Annie Onions (shown at witness on marriage cert).

The only Samuel Isaac Onions i can find was born in Staffordshire.

any help would be most appreciated

Thanks Sharon

I can't explain the Foster name but
Samuel Isaac Onions b. 1879 registered West Bromwich

1901 26 Moorgate, N Retford,Nottingham

Samuel Onions age 21 Boot and shoe maker (shopkeeper) born Oldbury(Oldbury birth would be registered West Bromwich)
Florence age 19
b. Retford
Annie 6 months b. Retford.

Samuel Onions married Florence Holland june 1900 Retford, Notts.

Thank you for your help - this is pretty much what i had, but felt it was wrong with the Foster element.

Oh well - looks like i will never know. May be if i order the birth certificate of lily onions, it may just shed some light.

Thank you very much

Sharon

Hi, I had a similar situation and when I looked further I found that the person had been born before his mothers marriage and so was baptized with her maiden name. His mother then married and for a time the child used the married name, when he got married he was shown as one name alias the other. Then in following census he was sometimes one name and sometimes the other. Luckily he had an unusual christian name and came from a small village so it wasn't too difficult to follow him. I hope this makes sense and is of some help.

Strange mystery but when searching for Samuel on Ancestry the marriage of a Rose Foster came up married to Samuel Onions in 1894,Birmingham?
I cannot find this couple in 1901 and there would be no connection with either Annie or Lily Onions.

In 1891 there is a Fredric Foster living with Samuel's family born abt 1870 Carbrook, Yorkshire, England, he's down as a visiter. the family are living 1 West Bromwich St Oldbury. So there must be some connection to the name 'Foster', could Sam's mother have married twice ?

Hi

Thank you so much for this, i will certainly check it all out. I have gotten in to the thought process that it must have been his wife that may have been married before, that I didn't think it might have been his mother.

I will let you know how i get on.

Thank you

Sharon
