I'm new to the forum but thought it maybe a place i could get a few answers, hopefully!! I am trying to trace an old shop in either new or high street in west bromwich which would date back to at least 1891.I believe it was a greengrocers has on the 1891 census for the family the wife's occupation is listed as greengrocer and it being her own business.I just don't know where to look i've tried most things but no joy. Also i am trying to find obituaries dating from 1912 to 1948 for west bromwich also but don't know were to start.Any advice or suggestions would be gratefully received has i am near banging my head up the wall. Thanks in advance.

hello, what is the name of your ancestor with the greengrocer shop in west bromwich? we might be able to find it that way :)

Hello Shera,
Thanks for replying my mom remembers an old photograph from when she was about 7 or 8 years old of a shop with the name Stein over the top of it but the family name is actually Stain but there have been several variations along the line.I believe the shop would have still been about in the 1940s for my mom to remember it.It may have also been passed along the family line has the eldest sons wife on the 1901 census shows her has a greengrocer with her own business.Any help would be brilliant.

im really sorry, been looking through the directories 1936 and 1940 but cannot find a stain/stein greengrocers. hope someone else will have a go for you :(

Thanks for replying Shera, are there any greengrocers or any other shops of that name in west bromwich in any of the streets. My mom said have you looked at Bull street?? Its getting me really mad,i'm beginning to think my mom may be remembering it wrong! Is there anyway of checking electoral rolls for their names to see if there is a business listed under any of their names.I can supply the names if someone could do a check for me.Also, any ideas on the obituaries for someone in west bromwich between 1912 and 1948.Thanks again.
Tracey

im sure your mom isnt getting it wrong but its hard to search the directories. west brom comes under staffordshire in the directories but just cant find anything for stain/stein except for a solicitor henry walter stein high st. burton, so thats no good. as for the electoral rolls, i have them at the moment for birmingham but not west brom. the obits.......havent got a clue im afraid  so i cant help

I looked at the 1880 Staffs directory and could find no entry for a Stein or Stain either as a greengrocer or any other business in West Bromwich.
I then looked at the 1904 directory. I found no greengrocer with that or a similar name, but did find the following entry:

Stain William, shopkeeper, 37 George street

George St is just off High St, and it could have been a more general shop than just a greengrocer at that time

Thanks Mike, my relative William Stain lived at 37 George Street, west Bromwich so that tallies.I assumed stupidly(DOH!!!) that they would live in one place and work in another. They must have been costermongers were they sold a variety of things.Where did you find the 1904 directories for it?? Thanks again for your help much appreciated.:) I'm going to be cheeky any ideas about finding old obituaries???

I'm afraid I don't have much knowledge of west Bromwich papers. The Sandwell archives could probably help. As far as the 1904 directory is concerned, it is on a CD from Midland historical data.
