This postcard is for sale on eBay. It's advertised as the Old Farriers Arms, Birmingham 1890. No idea where it is/was precisely, but an interesting photo. Viv.

This pub has been mentioned before on the forum. Here are some comments I made about it then:

In the 1841 directory George Jones is listed in Lichfield st (no number given) as just veterinary surgeon and livery stables. By 1845 and 1849 it is George Jones, car proprietor and pub landlord at the Farrier’s Arms. By 1855 his son Henry Jones has taken over , he also being publican, vet and car proprietor

Thanks Phil and Mike. Surprised at the use of the word 'car' proprietor. Thought 'car' was a more modern term. Expect it was short for carriage given the carriage works behind the Old Farriers Arms. Or maybe short for cart, but that seems a pointless shortening of an already short word! Can't find it in any old occupation descriptions. Being a vet makes sense re the stables and maybe there was a blacksmiths/forge/shoeing smiths near to the inn too for horses/carriages travelling along the Lichfield Road to and from Lichfield. Combining all three - well Jones was obviously an enterprising man. Viv.

When looking through the papers for the 150 year thread I find the term very common. From the contexts it must be short for carriage, and this is confirmed by looking at the British Newspaper website, where, if you look for car proprietor, then the earliest mention that comes up (in the whole country, not just Birmingham) is in Aris's Birmingham Gazette 27 Sept.1824 shown below
