I am looking at buying my wife a notepad/notebook for Christmas.

Do any of you use a similar machine or could give me some ideas of what sort of specification i should be looking for?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

many thanks

What does she want to do? I am surprised what I can do on a Kindle Fire HD, with google installed. Cant run MS Office and I cant find a way to copy and paste but for Internet browsing and emails it is perfect, and very portable.

It all depends what your wife would use it for. Is it to be a surprise or have you had a hint ?

If it is mostly for use in your home, I would go for a standard 15.6" screen laptop having a keyboard etc.

If your wife wants a light weight semi portable but still with a keyboard then go for a Netbook with 11.6" screen.
My young grandaughter has one and I was impressed with it when I recently upgraded it to Windows 10.

Then there are the tablets, very portable, ideal for emails, facebook, and exchange of photos etc, but without real keyboard and mouse. I use an iPad most of the time and it has no problems wifi connecting with my Windows devices.

Have a browse through shop websites such as 'pcworld' and see what is within your budget, narrow down your choice and then decide from where you want to buy it.

You can get tablets for most price ranges - even reconditioned ones at places like CEX - in most cases you can get a keyboard of some sort fairly cheaply that will plug in if necessary. Android, the operating system on most tablets, is a version of linux which means there's a lot of free software about. The main point against such tablets is that they have very little internal storage (4-8 GB usually) and not much more by way of plug-in space.
