I know that scenario very well, Kandor. There was only one kid beneath me in the 'pecking order' - he is now a millionaire from running a highly profitable business, probably the richest of all who were in the class. Bah. Humbug. *Kicks empty tin can*

Me, I was the original 'Brummie Hobbit' and half blind to. I was never picked first or second and only just made not being last, that went to a girl who had a misshapen hand with no finger. Then I became the best friend of the brightest girl in the class and she made sure I got picked somewhere in the middle on which ever team sh was in.
However who cares ? I sure don't as NAS said

I met my friend again last year, we managed to find each other a couple of years ago on the good old WWW. Our meeting after 42 years was great, both husbands got on well and it was if we had never been parted. She said "I always knew you would do well for yourself and you have. That's why I took you under my wing, the others all thought you were dumb because you couldn't see too well and wore those coke bottle bottom glasses. You also look amazing for 60 a lot better than most of then do."

So many of us felt that way because of cliques not our inability. Children feel the same today and always will. But you are so right Norma. "It's not where you start but where you finish" Mo
