North Solihull Sports Centre - old photos

John Kimberley

Brummie babby
Does anyone have any memories or old photos of the North Solihull Sports Centre off Cooks Lane, Kingshurst? The site is where the Hadfield estate is now.

John, I moved to Conway Road in 1987 (still here !) and remember the old sports centre, I remember it was rather run down, particularly the running track complete with pot holes, it looked neglected. I was told that if the locals would agree to having it demolished and replaced by housing they would build a brand new ultra modern sports centre in Conway Road , and that's what happened. No pics of old sports centre I'm afraid. Eric

Thanks Eric
Been here a similar length of time myself - 1986. I live in Meriden Drive. I raised the question because my son, now 28, has happy memories of going there when he was quite young. We never seem to come across photos or hear anyone talk about the place, and it would be nice to share a few memories or photos.
Cheers
John

I moved to Conway road in 1970 and can remember the track and clubhouse being built.
In my much younger days myself and my Boxer used to run around it on our daily walk by the river.
There was running club attached to it and the founder John Walker who lived in Cooks lane, ( I think he died earlier this year,) was also the person who started the Chelmsley Marathon.
The first was in 1980 and there was a huge marquee on open ground which now houses the Swimming pool.
Bob Monkhouse came to start it.
There were 2000 entrants and part of the route was down the small collector road, Birmingham road, Coleshill bypass and then sorry my memory fails me.

Thanks again for the replies. There was a nice piece on BBC Inside Out about the Peoples Marathon recently, and reference was made to John Walker and all his work. His daughter was interviewed for the programme. Would still love to have a few photos and other memories of the old Sports Centre if anyone has them from the 70s, 80s and 90s.
