master brummie

any advice welcome

Re: william edward norris

Hi lisa,

I have been searching for Richard Norris but its difficult as there are so many and we don't know many details ie; age, location etc. I think Minnie may well have been William's sister, there is a marriage listed (Minnie Norris & Colin Norman Wood Bham S June 1929, 6d 102) This coincides with the time she left Churchill Road. I searched the electoral roll and found them, 1930-1935 44 Burlington Road Small Heath. 1939 131 Lakey Lane Hall Green. I check the birth indexes for Colin Wood and he was born in 1902, I guess Minnie would be around his age?

Re: william edward norris

brilliant thanks :-)

william was 35 when he married in 1928, so his birth year would be 1893 - 94, but as for location, not a clue. my dad has a vague memory of an uncle from london trying to visit him in the orphanage at some point, but he refused to see him.

Re: william edward norris

On the certificate does it say what Richard Norris dec. occupation had been and also does it say William is unmarried.
The reason I ask is that there is a marriage of a William E Norris to Minnie Matthews in 1922,Bristol,Sept 6a 430.and I thought that Minnie may have been his wife not sister.

I have searched birth records 1892-1894
WILLIAM EDWARD NORRIS

1892 Wincanton ref Oct 5c 418

1893 Rotherham ref 9c 745

1894 Bath ref Oct 5c 526

you can order from GRO Southport stipulating you only want the certificate if the fathers name is Richard.that way you do not pay for the wrong one.

Re: william edward norris

hi

it says that richard (deceased) was a tube works clerk, and it says william was a batchelor, so guess that means he had never been married? would it say widower or divorced if otherwise?

on the birth front, was there anything for london, we have a feeling they originated in london area, he has always felt this (not sure why) and he had an uncle who visited from london when he was about 14 who he refused to see - but of course may be all a red herring - or uncle just happened to live in london.

thanks for all your help :-)

Re: william edward norris

Hi Lisa,

on your dads birth cert where it states 'mothers full name' does she have a middle name or initial? There are quite a few Ruby Norris's listed between 1895-1905 many of them in the London area. A middle name or initial would be great although if she doesn't have one that would narrow things down too.

Re: william edward norris

hi, on his birth certificate there is no middle name, does this definately mean she didnt have one though?

looks like you were right as to minnie being williams sister, on his marriage certificate the witnesses include a M Norris and a C N Wood. thank you.

i have a list of ruby norris births frim 1898 to 1908 that we sourced at the library, but none of them seem to be in the same place as the william edward births that alberta kindly found (although my geography is not brilliant so some of them may be very close! or they may have moved house i guess between kids).

getting a big bogged down now and not sure which way to turn!

Hi Lisa
As Alberta said on an earlier post, you can order from GRO's stipulating you only want the certificate if the fathers name is Richard.that way you do not pay for the wrong one.

Re: william edward norris

Lisa, with the info Macca gave you about the marriage of Minnie to CN Wood and the witnesses M Norris and CN Wood I think the most important thing is to get the marriage certificate of Minnie and find her age this will lead you to getting her birth with parents names and lead to William and Ruby.

Re: william edward norris

hi alberta

i have william edward norris and violet pearts marriage certificate, this gives the father (and therefore rubys father) as richard norris a tube works clerk, deceased. it gives williams age as 35, and the witnesses as m norris and c n wood - which ties in with the marriage of minnie norris (who appeared briefly on williams electoral entry) to colin norman wood in 1929 which macca found for me.

i have now requested a marriage certificate for a ruby norris to a james wilcox in 1927, in birmingham south, i have said i only want if the fathers name is richard. we can maybe at least discount this if nothing else!!

many thanks for all you help, will let you know if marriage certificate brings any news,

Help - Im stuck now!! - Ruby Norris

Hi all, thank you for all the wonderful help you have given me so far. Especially Macca and Alberta.

I now have a marriage certificate for Ruby E M Norris to James A Wilcox, August 1927. Birmingham south, register office. Her address at time of marriage ties in with Hope Lodge, age at marriage was 27, and her fathers name is Richard Edward Norris (deceased) which all ties in with info we have so far.

I cannot find a birth though of a Ruby E M Norris, or Ruby Norris with a father Richard.

Where do I go from here, where was she born, where did she die, where was she in between. Why did my dad end up in an orphanage when he appears to have had his mother with him to nearly 5 years of age, plus at least an uncle and an aunt in Birmingham. I know most of those questions will probably remain unanswered forever.

Any advice would be brilliant.

Thank you

Lisa

Re: william edward norris

hi

i now have the marriage certificate for ruby e m norris to james a wilcox, it appears to be the right one as her father is named at richard edward norris (deceased) as on williams, and her address is right for hope lodge, where we know she was living when my dad was baptized.

she was 27 at time of marriage, but i am stumped at finding a birth for her - anywhere under the name ruby elsie matilda norris, or ruby e m norris or even ruby norris with other details that tie in!!

Stuck again - help!!

thanks to all of you for all the wonderful help you have given me.

Re: william edward norris

Hi Lisa,

Great news that you've found Ruby's marriage. I think that as you can't find either Ruby or her brother William's birth registration's it is possible that they weren't born in England or Wales. Could they have migrated from Scotland or Ireland (Norris is a common surname in Ireland) or even further afield? The empire was huge then. You could check the indexes of British births abroad.

Try not to get frustrated, it will make the search all the more worthwhile when you finally get answers!

Re: william edward norris

Re: william edward norris

hi macca

so much help - thank you :-)

on the ruby marriage certificate we have it states her father as richard edward norris and his rank as C.S.M South Staffs Regiment, he is deceased at the time of rubys marriage in 1927, is there anyway i can research his army time as we dont know when he was serving, just thought it may give us a clue as to his birth date or place or place of residency ???

williams army details are very interesting even if they dont give us to much more info - thank you
