GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN R.I.P.
Demise
Mills are silent and hammers still
Men out of work what a bitter pill
What becomes of men laid off work
Men who never knew what was to shirk
Men forced to beg with a broken soul
Queuing down at their local dole
Babies going without a crust of bread
Mothers and fathers filled with dread
Begging ain’t for the likes of proud folk
Trying to eke out a living ain’t a joke
Now all the factories have been shutdown
An eerie silence as settled around the town
Standing around in groups telling a tale
All those empty factories put up for sale
Honest folk who only knew hard toil
What did we do to earn this turmoil
No money for food or the rent
What little we had as been spent
The rent man comes calling for pay
His only words were you can’t stay

John Houghton

Golly the words are familiar.......... I spent almost a lifetime on the Dole, it was miserable, it takes away everything, but most importantly it steals your self esteem and leaves you with nothing.
