NO WAITING CLANG

I grew up with one of these outside the house. I would get woken up early in the morning when a bloke came along with a pole to change the sign as it was parking on one side of the road until lunchtime and then on the other side of the road in the afternoon. However, he would rock up at around 6 o'clock to change the sign with a loud clanging noise. 6 o'clock in the morning is VERY early for a pre-teen kid and it was a nuisance as far as I was concerned. On the other hand, in the winter it was nice to think that there was more time to roll over in bed before school.

We didn't have parking restrictions on our road as it wasn't used that much. I do however remember the man with the ladder coming to clean the panes of the gas lamps, leaning his ladder against the 'arms'. I don't remember there being a lamp near our pre-fab so it didn't disturb us. Thinking about it, in those days I slept like a log so I don't think even the 'clang' would have woken me!

I always believed cities and their main streets were noisy places most times of day - or it seems so, especially since the advent of motor vehicles. ;) But then I have always lived in quiet areas.

It is interesting what sounds and movements will awake you. Having impaired hearing I hear little - sometimes sleeping through thunder. But it seems that anyone - however quietly, - will awake me.
