Newtown Aston

Does anyone know when the name Newtown was first used? I grew up in Anglesey street in the sixties and seventies. I always sensed it was a'new' name for the area redeveloped between Nursery road going north to Towards Town
Thanks

Hi Lozellskid & adding to Astoness helpful post,

1968 given as year of naming Newtown to incorporate the building of 16 blocks of Flats
+ other developments in that area betwixt & between Hockley/Lozells/Birchfield/Aston/Nechells/Erdington

Lozellskid, when I lived in Nechells in the late 50's the area around Newtown Row was always known as Newtown. Later in 1962 when I worked at J A Ryley on Newtown Row their postal address was always Newtown as far as I recall. All this was before 1968.

Thanks everyone.
Where Hockley started and Lozells ended etc. was always somewhat of a guess to me. My parents both worked at Lucas Great King street. Was that Hockley or Newtown?
I went to primary school at St Francis Brougham street. 45 years later I'm still not sure if it was in Lozells, Handsworth or Hockley. it almost seems to depend on who you talk to.
Thanks
Ray

newtown row 1898.jpgjust add that newtown row was there many many years before newtown was born it ran from lancaster st finished round about where the bartons arms is and then the high st started...here is a pic of newtown row taken in 1898

Below is part of a map issued on the sale of a part of the aston estate in Oct. 1861, which clearly shows Aston New Town area as existing then

And i can recall the begining of the new town developments and the road
from six ways through to the city centre and the destruction of all the shops
except the hippo which they never touch apart from that every think went
and the first high rise block of newtown was inkerman house and we lived on the top floor of the high rise block over looking crocodile works and summer lane
and watched them develop the precint around us and the bye pass express way slowly over the years it was chaos but good when they finished it and of course the baths and the litle pubs down around us those was the good days when you wanted to live but not like tday run down; best wishes Astonian;

My gt gt grandparents married in 1860 and their address was given as Aston New Town. I think their address was Brearley Street, it was a few months later when their first child was born.
