Newsagents 1970s opp Small heath Park

In the 70s there was a large busy newsagents on Coventry Rd Small heath -right opposite the park (between Charles rd and Dora rd).It was run by a smartly dressed elderly white haired gentleman with thin rimmed glasses - i've remembered all that - but not the name of the shop !-anyone recall it? - as it was one of the major shops there and iirc it closed well before 1990

Could it have been this one listed in Kelly's 72-73

600/602 Lyndon Newsagents.

It was situated opposite the park between Charles Rd and St Oswalds Rd.

Hang about a bit & I'll ask my Ma & Pa........will give em a quick ring!:)

Ok, it was called Swanells. The man was possibly Mr Swanell himself (got this from a friend who worked nearby to the shop), altho Mom & Dad seem to think that a Mr Smith (Reg, Ray??) married one of the Swanell girls & altho Mr Smith worked as a hairdresser (possibly in Golden Hillock Rd) he may have worked in the Swanells shop occasionally.

Does this help at all??

There was another newsagent on the park side about 3 shops away, the name was Coopers i used to deliever newpapers in 1947 my round there, down and up Charles rd along the Coventry rd ,up Muntz st, down Lloyds st, then along Wordsworth rd, then back to the shop,i used to walk from Greenway St there and back,at 6 Oclock in the morning and again after school, after about a year i told Mr Cooper i was packing the job up as it getting me down ,but because i was reliable and there every day , he brought me a second hand bike,he let me use it for my own pleasure

Mmm - it's either Swanells or Lyndons then - from those two it must be which ever was largest in size
I recall from 1974 onwards - don;t know if that then excludes Lyndons

I remember it was Lyndons and it was adouble fronted shop, that was in the days when you couold be newspapers and a good selection of stationary and sweets from newsagents. I think Lyndons was sold and subsequent ownerd didn't make a success of it and for quite a few years now it has been a butchers shop
