Hi All, I am a descendant of Newey family that migrated to Australia, late 1800s?
My Great Grandfather was William Mark Newey 1882?-1961 married Mildred Amelia Hughes.
Had 2 x sons, William Thomas and Arthur Henry.
If anyone has any additional information on this branch of the family,it would be greatly appreciated.. Karen

I have had a hard struggle trying to get information.
My dad is still alive and gave me the names but as his father died when he was quite young, didnt have dates or anything.
Any additional information you may come across would be greatly appreciated.

Karen , I am finding it difficult to locate Millie in any records,unless one of our other members can find her the best way to solve her mystery is to get the marriage certificate from Birmingham register office,which you can do online, this will give her fathers name and occupation.
The only occasion she uses Mildred Amelia is in 1911 census, on her marriage she is Milly, no Amelia, when she went to Australia it was a Millie.
She is in Kellys trade directory as Millie at 86 Victoria Street in 1913 as a Milliner.
Another strange record is the baby Mildred in 1911, I found no record but on the census entry it states children= 2 born, 2 alive, 1 deceased. I think that Mildred was born 1 month before the census and had since died, there are no records of her and she was not on the list of the vessel Mantua.

I think it's a transcription error on the 1911 census. There is a Milly Leah Newey registered Mar qtr 1901, Aston, mmn Hughes. So she would have been 10.

Her death was also registered Mar qtr 1901, Aston, so shouldn't be on the 1911 census. As it was the first census when the occupants had to fill it in themselves some people got confused with what they had to put down.

I think Milly/Mildred is registered as Amelia, Dec qtr 1883 Aston.

In 1901 William and Milly are living with Milly's parents William and Mary Hughes, Milly's sister Ada and William's sister Florence.

In 1891 Milly (listed as Amelia) and Ada are with parents, William E and Kezia (not sure why there's a difference for mother's name atm).

Ada Louisa is baptised St John's Deritend 5 Dec 1886 and registered Dec qtr Aston, mmn Harris. Amelia Hughes, mmn Harris registered Mar qtr 1881.

Keziah Harris b1850 Studley marries William (Edwin) Hughes as Mary Keziah Harris on 24 Apr 1870.

Keziah was possibly the illegitimate daughter of Orpah Harris.

Orpah married as William Pinfield Wells in 1855 and Keziah is with them 1861 listed as step daughter.

William Edwin Hughes birthplace is listed as Worcestershire and Somersetshire but it appears he was born 1846 in Ipsley, Worcs the illegitimate son of a Caroline Hughes.

There's a slight anomaly on the marriage when he puts his father's name as James but it's not uncommon for illegitimate children to give a name, be it totally made up or another relative (as it appears in this case, an uncle) even if they don't know who their father was.

I put the family tree is on a well known ancestry website as I am descended from it.

It is also your lucky day as I have photos (not of William Mark I think).

The family photo is of Thomas James and I think Harriet, Lucy, Leah and two of the boys. I can date the photo to between 1901 - 1903 as he got married again after his wife's death and had three more children.

The man is Mark William Newey and the woman is Charlotte James (William Mark's Grandparents)
