Having contact with old class mates Brian (summer lane kid) Harding and Beryl Evans i knew about this site some time ago and since my sons dragged me screaming into the twenteth century i finally got an internet conection. I was born in Gt Russell street but soon moved to 2/426 new john street west. with father touring France with his gun and the death of my mother i moved, but not far. In 1944 i joined my great aunt and her husband at 436 New John street west and if anyone remembers the street it was Millmans shop. Going down John street from summer lane it was on the left. 4 years later i moved again but a shorter distance to 448 which was probably opposite the other new member Peter Brackley.

The name is Evans but my family names include Yates, Overton and Gardner, all who lived in spitting distance of the lane since the 1830s, Harry Gardner a carpenter living on the lane itself. so if those names meen anything to anyone please get in touch. also old school friends Williams, Dugmore, Aldridge and Fisher

Kenny Cox doesn't spring to mind, but i do remember a Jim Cox and his return from Jap POW camp. I have left message for my cousin Joe Field who is your age and may remember him and his sister. My father had a butchers shop in new town row in the mid 50s until his death in 1972. It was opposite Corbetts next to the pork butchers and Blowers the barber

would you have anyu photographs or details of these shops
Kenny lives by me in Aldridge he will be 69 January

Hi Gang,

Im currently researching the area around New John Street, Summer Lane and Hopsital Street between 1880 & 1930 with a view to attempting to write a novel based loosely around the life of my great grandfather who came from the area. Im too young to remember the area before the slum clearances, i was wondering if anyone had any recollections, photos or stories about the area? Im particularly interested to know if there were any gangs thats roamed the area as i understand that summer lane was 'a bit rough and ready' Ive asked a few people already on this forum via pm so thanks to them for their help. Hope you can help? :)

Hi Llamafarmer, You may already have this information about the gangs, etc. If you put "Peaky Blinders-History" in Google you will get several links about this gang and others at the time you mention. I remember someone telling me there was a gang called "Peaky Blinders"
who put razor blades in their caps for handy use during fights. Looks like there was a lot of violence around even then. Good luck with your research.
