New John Street West between Summer Lane & Newtown Row circa 50/60s

Tom Ross

knowlegable brummie
I am new to this brilliant site. My name is Tom Ross and grew up at 2/437 New John St West. I went to St Chads RC infants Juniors and Seniors. I would love to see any pics of the school or street. Living "up the entry" as we called it was fantastic. at the front of the entry was Millmans Shop.

Why do we (well I mean me really) assume that a man lurking outside a pub is up to no good?! Apologies if this man is someones relation/ancestor! But you've got to ask yourself, why isn't he INSIDE the pub enjoying himself? Viv..

Re: Wanted Photos of new John Street West between Summer Lane & Newtown Row circa 50/

totally agree viv...lurking outside is no good for anyone lol

Maybe he didn't have any money, and was waiting for the bookies runner to come with his winnings, so that he could go inside and have a drink. Or, perhaps he was waiting for his wife to come out of work with her wages, so that he could go inside and have a drink

I'll go with your 'bookies runner' theory Mike. Thinking it was his lucky day, he'd had a flutter on a white horse ! Viv.

Although there are some very similar photos to these three on here and on the linked pages I have checked and I don't think they are quit the same, obviously they have been taken at a later or earlier time.

Maybe he WAS the bookies runner, or he was waiting for the pub to open, not all day opening like now.
