I have been told that a new find in the many graves at Key Hill Cemetery is for a gentleman named Paton, who was the Chairman of the Austin Motor Company. Next time I visit I will get more details. I am always amazed at these finds and, the ammount of industrialists in the cemetery.

Hello Wendy
Do you know when a searchable record will be available for Key Hill on the Net?
David

At the moment all I know is that the BMSGH are transcribing the registers and there was talk of them putting them on pay to view instead of a CD. As I said it's just talk so not sure. The memorial inscriptions are also being done but I am not sure how they will be search-able as yet. If I find out I will put a post on here.

Wendy, Can find no record of a Paton being involved with the Austin motor co. but Ernest L Payton was chairman from 1941 until his death in 1946.
He was registered in 1877 West Bromwich and died in 1946 Gloucester.I would think it was a family plot for him to have been brought from Glos.to be buried in Key hill.

Ernest Leopold Payton 1881 census, transcriber unsure of spelling of the surname but it was PAYTON.

Wow thanks Alberta! The spelling may be wrong as it was a phone conversation. Now you have given so much info. I can't wait to visit the cemetery and take a photo thanks again....wendy

Hi Wendy,.

I have come across an Ernest Payton in my research for Friends of Key Hill 'Memory Lane' project. He is at section I plot 946:

To the dear and treasured memory of Ernest Leopold PAYTON born 11th January 1877 died 17th February 1946. “Great heart.”

He is the sole occupant of the grave and sadly died in a mental hospital in Gloucester.

Hope this helps.

Barry

Hello Barry, Thank you for that any information is so helpful as one day someone will find a link. The information Alberta has found should also be helpful

I thought your work on the memory lane project was/is just amazing all that fantastic information. I was a bit sad I did not have time to read it all on the Open Day as I was busy with the Tomb Bola....funny. Are you still doing this project? If so I would suggest also if it gets too much post the names here people are so helpful as you can see. I think most people would help with such a worth while project. Well done!

Thanks for your kind words, Wendy. I am not working on Memory Lane at present but when I do I shall certainly post any puzzlers for discussion.
I am currently helping with the memorial inscription project at Key Hill which I think has passed the halfway stage.
Regards
Barry

Barry you certainly do keep busy and I would like to thank you for all your hard work. I wish I had more time to help as I love Key Hill Cemetery. I also have several family members buried there. I realise now you are helping Dick with the inscriptions, such a mammoth task. I was also told the scaffolding is up to start on the restoration of the gate posts. I find all this so exciting and worthwhile.

For people reading this who don't know what Barry's Memory Lane project is. He chose a line of graves down a path and researched all the people buried in these graves on both sides of the path. He then put the details on small plaques down the path for all to read on the Open Day last year. I believe some people found their relatives there. It was a truly great piece of work.

Hello Barry,
I am contacting you as I have had for several years an original watercolour of four panels of a stained glass window. The names at the bottom are Elizabeth Payton in Memory of her husband Ernest Leopold Payton 1877-1946. I am trying to trace the actual church that this design was painted for. It may not ever have been made but when I put the name online, your site came up with details of the burial place of Ernest Leopold Payton in 1946 which could be the same man. Do you know if the chapel at Key Hill had any stained glass memorial windows? The saints on the 4 panels on the painting are St Michael, St Eadburgha, St Christopher and St Elizabeth of Hungary but as the chapel has gone , if they were in it then my search can go no further.Any other info you have about Ernest would be of interest too. Please could you let me know either way, so if it is the wrong place I can search further.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards
Carmen

Hi DJRVST ,

Key Hill Cemetery records are on line, searchable by name and Free to view via BMSGH website.
However the website does not give the grave location, although BMSGH does have the full records on their Computor at The Birmingham Institute, Margaret Street, Birmingham.

Hi Wendy & Brian,

Do you know when the next Key hill tour is ?
I have been asked if there is one tomorrow - Sunday 14th March 2010

That'll be for a special Mothers Day treat then? :)
There's one at Warstone Lane @ 12midday, then Key Hill @ 2.00pm.

Hello and welcome Carmen. How fascinating for you to have such interesting water colours. I am sure with the dates and a middle name of Leopold this would be the same man. I know there were memorial tablets inside the chapel but I don't know if there were any stained glass windows. The Chapel was demolished in the 1960's and there don't seem to be many close up photographs. The cemetery is mainly non conformist and such religions did tend to have rather plain Chapels and Churches. It would be lovely to find out if these windows were actually in a church. I wonder if Elizabeth commissioned the windows as her husband sadly died in a mental hospital. Also he is the only occupant of the grave. Does this mean maybe Elizabeth was of a different faith. We need some detective work now from our members visiting churches to look out for such windows.

Hello Wendy I have since found out that Ernest leopold Payton was finance director from 1922 and then chairman of Austin from 1941-45 but not much more. I will keep looking and let you know if i find anything more. Thanks Carmen
