Apparently my Great Great Grandad was in Prison in Birmingham in 1901. How can i find out what he was in for and how long he was in.

he lived in Aston i think. Wasnt there a police court at Aston ?

He was a market porter- possibly for The Bull Ring.

His name was William Neal.

There are some records on Ancestry but NOT for 1901 it jumps from 1900 to 1906 but I don't know why. I don't know if Birmingham library hold any other info.

Hello bobblehead welcome to the forum :unconscious: would it be possible to give more information? how old he was in 1901/approx year of birth, where he was born, any known address he was at, wife's name if he was married then - with more info something may show up in a search of old newspapers

There's a William Neal b1841 Market Bosworth listed as an inmate/prisoner in Birmingham, All Saints parish. Is that where Winson Green is? Censuses don't list crimes though.

this is the man MWS.
William Neal age 60,b.Market Bosworth, Market Porter
Prisoner AllSaints which is Winson Green.

just to add to the above info there could be a report of his crime in the british newspaper archives but at the min i am not subcribed to it so cant look it up...

All saints prison was actually in lodge road as it was then (called all saints prison Winson. Green,)
It later they built the Extent ion of the grounds and built a new section which we now all know as Winston green prison
And now called Birmingham prison to the system and the country
All saints became a santitoram for the mental I'll
The prison cells still exist inside the lodge road mental hospital today and they are used for patients of the real disturbed
And within the extentention the prison service at Winston green gaol they extented back into the hospital grounds
To build more prison cells but these are fairly new from the old section of cells and in those days the cells was below ground
There is corridors of them and now they call these at lodge road dormitrys where they knee the very serious cases of the disturb mental health
The prison hospital wing today is still within the grounds
I can recall when they built that new extending wall all around the prison from around lodge road right around to the gates
When they knocked down the prison officers houses the original wall was right behind there houses in fact it would have been the officers garden wall
Of there little houses then they built new ones across the road along side the giovenors house large house and the eagle pub
The goverers old house is still standing but its converted to some think else today
But going back in time the all saints hospital was the original prison before changing to Winson green rd of today
And is now Birmingham prison
It seems that the government converted a lot of these old hospital all those years back in time
Because we have one in worcestershire which was the old hospital and converted from the prison they called it the castle
But now its all gone
So. All saints was the all saints hospital which was the original prison which is where your relative would have spent his time
And not in the prison on Winson green. Red as it is today that's was all saints
Prison, best wishes Astonian,,,,,,,
