Nathaniel Mills Silversmith

gensec

knowlegable brummie
Looking for descendants of Nathaniel Mills and brothers, William and Thomas, who were very well known silversmiths during the 19th century in Caroline Street, Birmingham. Helping a researcher who is trying to get a blue plaque unveiled in their honour.

Hi there

just came across this. I am a direct descendant of nathaniel's sister Catherine who married william hughes in 1813 at St phillip's i am always interested in things regarding this line. i do have a contact somewhere who was also a descendant of the line who had done a lot of research on them i will try and find out his details who knows it may even be the same guy. feel free to pass on my details to this researcher anyway.

Welcome to the forum Rachel how lovely to be related to someone so famous. I don't know if you already know this. Nathaniel Mills's son also Nathaniel died in 1873 and is buried at Key Hill cemetery section F grave no 134.

Hi Rachel, Could you please let me have your email address so that I can pass it on to the researcher into Nathanial Mills. If you don't want to post it here you can send it to gensec@bmsgh.org.

Wendy mentioned about Nathaniel Mills junior being buried in Key Hill Cemetery, there is a fine monument (unusual) where he is buried. Nathaniel Mills senior is buried in St. Paul's Churchyard.

thankyou for the warm welcome Wendy that info has actually helped me a lot as i have always wondered if the mills were buried in key hill and have never had any joy in finding out it will be nice to go and have a look and pay my respects. it has always been a wonder to me about catherine and if the hughes' were maybe linked to the trade somewhere along the line (hughes is my maiden name) but obviously with catherine being the link there isnt much information out there on her. there are a lot of artistic people in the hughes line i myself am a photographer so i do wonder if we get it from catherine mills and that side of the family. i only started researching my family tree about 5 years ago and had no idea who nathaniel was until a fellow researcher contacted me about him but by sheer coincidence my eldest son is called Nathan i always liked the name but could never put my finger on why.

gensec my email addy is marajade76@sky.com i am very interested in any research on the mills family. thankyou too regarding nathaniel mills senior's burial place as i have often been passed there and wondered. i think a visit to birmingham this school holidays is in order.

thanks again
rachel

I believe that Nathaniel Mills were the very best silversmiths, in Birmingham in the 19th C, famous for vineretts, snuff box's. and lucifer holders.
