Hello, can someone refresh my memory please? From 1912 the mothers maiden name is listed along with the childs name... check?

Prior to 1912 is the mothers maiden name listed separately in the same book but on a different page?

Does this mean if im looking for the children of a particular mother all i need to do is look for the mothers maiden & first name then check for the same page number of her kids under the fathers surname?

Or is that too easy?

I have the mothers maiden and first name but im unsure what her children were called or how many she had. She was married in 1903. How would you lot go about checking for her children?

Are you referring to the information in the GRO index? If so, the mothers maiden name is not recorded prior to 1912. You need to get the certificate. You are correct that after 1912 the maiden name is recorded in the index.

Have you tried looking in the 1911 census? It should give you the name of the kids

hi doug, yes i looked at the census and it gives details of sam (my grandad) and his brothers ernest and alfred....

His other siblings were born in 1914 (william) 1918 (albert) and 1921 (florence)

I cant find alfred in the bmd at the moment, but am determined to locate him today from the 1911 census it looks like he was born in 1906

I was wondering if they had any other children and am scouring the bmd trying to locate them (loads of smiths!)

Looking at the spread of the ages I suspect they are all there. Possibly one more before Alfred.

Hi

Mothers name is a valuable tool in building up Family
trees. Using the Family Sir name and the Mothers maiden
name and the registration district the whole Family is traceble.
Often the Girls of the Family will marry in the same registration
district.
