Moseley Street, Digbeth

Shortie

master brummie
Can anyone tell me where No 26 Moseley Street was please? There are one or two old houses (sadly converted) still in existence but none where I need them to be. I am doing a family history for someone as a Christmas present (he has some information, but could not finish it in time as I have been ill) but am lacking certain bits and pieces.

Many thanks

Shortie

Shorty,

Moseley Street ran from Moseley Rd to Sherlock St, number 26 would have been on the right hand side travelling from Sherlock St uphill just past Barford St, most of the housing in this area has now been replaced by factories now.

Thanks Phil - I use the fabric shop at the end of Moseley Street (but don't know the number), but I did wonder, as there are some houses still there, whether No 26 was, although deep down I did not think it would be. The chap I am looking for was a wire weaver, working on his own account, so I was thinking it was a house with a workshop at the rear and would probably be a decent size, seeing as he had a large family all living at home for quite some time. I suspect Moseley Street as it is now is shorter than it was originally.

Are we talking about Moseley Rd or Moseley Street as I cant think of any houses that are left on Moseley St, save the hostel that was old police station section house. Moseley Street was cut short when they built the new wholesale fruit an poultry market and some of Barford St and half of Bishop St was lost as can be seen from these two maps. Though it wasn't that much of Moseley street itself in length.

Shortie, The Fabric Shop (Barry's) is no. 1 Moseley Street now but I think that may have been 22 in 1890 (mikejee would know better I feel)
According to Kelly's 1890, 26 was between Barford Street and Rea Street South, hope this helps

Phil, Yes, it is Moseley Street on the census. He lived prevoiusly in Barford Street. I did a 'street view' tour of Moseley Street yesterday, and there are one or two houses, but not used as houses any more of course.

Thank you to both Lindyloo and Mike. I did realise the street had been cut short and the one that was No 26 had probably been hit by the bulldozer. The chap I am doing this family history for was brought up without his father, who died three years ago at the age of 66. He didknow his one gran, but no-one has any clue about the family in the past, and I was doing it as a Christmas present. I have been ill for a month, so he only got a precis, but he was thrilled with it. I now intend to continue and get as many photographs, maps, etc, to illustrate where his family lived.

It wasn't that long ago that they demolished that section of Moseley Street, because when my Aunt opened the café across the road in the eighties there were buildings still standing then. I just can't remember what they were even though I used the café every day with my uncle.
