Hi all I am trying to find info on my gggg grandfather, his name is John Moore he was born in Sedgley in 1769. He married Esther Bratt who we think was born in the Birmingham area. Most of my family were boatmen but I do not know if this is true in this case, any pointers would be much appreciated. Carol

the moores was a very big family of boat people and regular always tugging up and down the cut most of the time any barge you would see would have had the name moore on it
with or with out the big grey shire horse pulling it they was a common sight to see
there should be some registration of the family ofhistory with in the orinional water ways history
i spent a lot of my life down the water ways from the black country right through the feeder locks at smethwick and through to the old gas street birmingham and at the lock keepers house smethwick
best wishes Astonian ;;;;

Thanks Astonian for your reply. I remember now my grandad talking about the shirehorse. Its funny how a little prompting can bring back a memory.
Many thanks for that Dilly666

hi dilly
i remember them just like yesterday we used to go up the stables where they kept a couple of them
and on one occasion when we first went up to the stable yard one made a bolt for us
he gharged and ran after us but luckly ralph was on hand
the very oldest one of the team was a great big shire horse called charlie he was the regular one up and down the country from that neck of the woods he would pull any think he was the best one for the coal
and he was regular around the cl;issold street - new spring st coal wharf where
the men would unload the coal on the wharf side by hand and big shovels
and the public would hire a barrow and take it from the cannal edge
i have seen charlie when he plays up he makes a noise and goes up on his hind legs
he would be twenty feet high i can recall the moores family and there barges
i do not know where to suggest where there may be a record of them some where
but the cannal people do some open days and display there history i suggest go along to the old basin in gas street there may be some of the cannal people there whom may be help you to put you in the right direction
i do recall they remoderen ised the old bargees house many years ago into info; andtourist offices
and there was some older generation and tradional people from he old dayswhom were there
and there ws a water ways office
in my mind i can go back donkeys years when you had to bend right down to walk the lengh of the tunnel
to get into gas street basin on foot and you could notsee your hand in front of yourself
best wishes dilly and good luck . Astonian ;;;

Its lovely speaking to you Astonian I can just picture the scene you discribed. My grandad Harry Moore told me about the 1 horse who used to run ya and tried to bite but I dont really remember the names of them. You mentioned a Ralph who was he Astonia? Did you work the boats? My grandad Harry married Violet Chew they were a big boatee family as well. Anyway nice reminising with you speak to you soon. God bless Carol
