Monkey Boats

These were so named after the person who designed this canal boat, Thomas Monk. The drawing is of a monkey boat on the Grand Union Canal in 1850. These inspired a later barge design by Fellows, Moreton and Clayton.

The sail is somewhat inconsistent with the canal, although narrow boats did have sails for certain navigations such as the Severn

Thomas Monk was a boat builder at Tipton and there were other members of the Monk family who had other boat yards

The Fellows began carrying with James Fellow senior who had a close association with John Bagnall and Sons, iron masters and they gave sureties for a credit account for carrying along the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal. Their cargoes in those early days included iron goods

The association with Fred Morton led to the formation of an important canal carrying company. They came to build their own boats at Saltley
