MILLARD, THomas, Born c1843 presumably Warwickshire

Tony Cocks

Parkhurst Boy
Hello,

Thomas MILLARD was sentenced at Birmingham on 21/06/1859 to 7 years Penal Servitude and served until 30/03/1864 at Parkhurst Prison from where he was transferred to Dartmoor Prison. He was not transported and The National Archives have been unable to confirm he was released on licence.

I have no further information!! There is no record of him on the Criminal Registers (my details are from Parkhurst Prison sources), neither, as far as I have researched, are there Census, LDS nor newspaper mentions. In fact the prison listing is the only recording for him. It may be that he was not from Birmingham/Warwickshire and I am seeking the proverbial needle.

All reasonable, printable suggestions as to his biography accepted??

For now,

Tony Cocks

in the bham journal dated 11 june 1859 there is this report.

PICKING POCKETS IN JOHN STREET. a youth named thomas millard, aged 15, by trade a gun finisher, and living in a court in hospital street, was charged with stealing a handkerchief from the pocket of mr. thomas lowe, 8 bordesley street. the magistrates committed the prisoner to the sessions.

if i find anymore i will post it.

cant find any more newspaper articles but if you look under thomas "willard" in the ancestry criminal register 20 jun 1859 warwickshire you will find your man!

Hello Shera,

Thank you for the details......I am very grateful.

The WILLARD transcription is slightly aggravating (blame Ancestry) in that the primary source looks definitely like MILLARD (to me anyway!!)........but then sadly the WILLARD option does not open any avenues in the Census and other sources. I only have access to 19th Century British Library Newspapers and they have not digitised the Birmingham Journal.

It looks as though a very large brickwall is facing me!!

For now,

Tony

Here is the report from the Birmingham Daily Post 9th June 1859. I only managed to find it because shera gave the name of the person he stole from (Thomas Lowe) and the date it first appeared in the Birmingham Gazette - a search for Thomas Millard got no results.
