A firm which began making varnishes, going into associated products, and later into paints and colours. Claimed to have been established in 1780, it is certainly listed as James Meredith & Co in 1815 at 108 Lionel St, becoming John & Samuel Meredith by 1841. They remained at Lionel St till around 1890, though in the 1880s also had works in Great Tindall St and Ludgate Hill, then moving to Western Road. where they were when this photograph of Harry Beach and his van was taken around the 1930s. The advertisements for the firm are very impressive.
