Below is an article from the Evening Mail by someone remembering their youth, in the same way as many people here do regularly. but this is from 1972 and thier youth is around the turn of the century , 70 years before. The bit about midland red just happened to be on the same page in my scrapbook.

Mike - most interesting thanks. The mention of the Herb Beer house on Navigation Street piqued my interest - anyone know what it was please? I assume it was some sort of Temperance initiative selling the delights of Dandelion & Burdock and Sarsaparilla?

The paragraph re Lloyd George riots. The officer who got him away was my wifes grandfather. He got thr Kings Police Medal for that.

there were several places marked as dining rooms, but i think the most likely candidates for the herb beer house (if listed) was the birmingham Gospel Temperance mission, who were at nos 21-22 and also at no 40 . i suspect one was the offices, the other the herb beer shop.

Mike-g - That must take pride of place in your family tree, fantastic - did the medal get handed down? It would be lovely to see it

Mikejee - thank you, I think Birmingham was quite big on Temperance at one stage which I always find surprising

Astonian - such naming debates remind me of a similar discussion around the motto for the Birmingham Arms. We were almost lumbered with the easily misinterpreted "Fortitudo et Rectum" lol, alternatives being "Emporium of the World" (my fave), "Peace, Law & Order" (wishful thinking considering the number of riots) and "Unity, Liberty, Prosperity" before the simple "Forward" was eventually chosen. Unfortunately the Council forgot to apply to the College of Arms so the arms were used illegally for over 30 years. Also the De Bermingham's arms were wrongly copied and when this was discovered in 1867 there were 3 versions being displayed around town. They were changed again in 1889 when it became a city (adding the two supporters) and again in the 1930s & 1979 (inc Sutton arms)

Unfortunatly the Medal, along with other personal items ""disapeared "" My late father in law remembers iit being in a safe box in the bank. It was never seen again after his death
