There is a thread about Kunzles Cakes but not heard of a McCunzles.

I have just found it funnily enough, but i am positive they made sweets..in particular...nut brittle! Mum used to be on this production line, i remember her telling me:)

Someone will be along with better information I have no doubt.

Bernie. Thought you were suggesting that McCunzells could have been Kunzels, hence my reference to cakes with a chocolate shell.

Hi Nick - Have sent you an Instant Message but you are correct the name is too similar to avoid the thought that it was Kunzle but as I cannot find reference to them making a 'Nut Brittle' (so far) then it must be another company being referred to.

There is scant information around on the line of chocolates that Kunzle's brought out in the 1950's called Kunzle's Art Dessert. There are several copies
of their ads for this product online and I remember them as mentioned in my post to the Kunzle's thread on the Forum. Perhaps the company did make this chocolate
assortment themselves. Just not enough info at this point to answer this. Since the Art Dessert chocolates had different centres may be nuts were used.
Here's a link to a couple of the ads https://www.flickr.com/photos/32705854@N04/4447009731/

Thanks Bernie, had the same thoughts myself.

Kunzles used to make sweets for other suppliers and used that companies name on the wrappers.

The only local place I have heard of that made/makes peanut brittle is Edward (Teddy) Grays in Dudley - most known for their herbal tablets, but having had a quick look, they don't seem to have had factories in Birmingham itself, just the Black Country.

Not quite correct Jenny - "To give an idea of the importance of Kunzle, in 1965 the Scottish company, Golden Casket, acquired the Kunzle exclusive distribution rights for Scotland. In the year previously the turnover for Kunzle cakes was only £10,000 per year but within 18 months of acquiring the distributorship the turnover increased to over £200K. By 1968 this had increased to £400K a year.

In November 1968 Lyons bought the bakery side of Scribbans-Kemp"
