Hello

A friend has asked for my help to find information on his dad - he doesn't have internet access - so now I'm calling on the most generous people from this site for your assistance please

His dad's name was - George Philip Hamilton Matthew born Birmingham 1885 - he knows nothing more about his dad as his parents gave him up to 'a friend' to rare.

James

George Phillip Matthew (15) appears on the 1901 census , son of George Paradise Matthew (40), musical instrument maker (employer) and Sarah Matthew (27) , living at 45 Hall Road. He works in his father’s business.

His father is listed at that address in Kellys (1899-1900) as a private address (as Mathews). The same years George Phillip Matthew is listed as a musical instrument maker on soho Hill (unnumbered but between 28 and 60).
In 1903-5 George Phillip Matthew is listed as living at 51 Soho Hill , which is the opposite side of the road to the workplace (still in the same place). In 1905 he seems to have disappered from the directory.
There is no mention of the firm in 1897.

George P Matthew age 32 Widower, Instrument maker born London
George Philip age 5 born Birmingham
Clara Matthew age 60 mother born London

George Paradise Matthew was born London,Pancras,1857 to George Paradise Matthew and Helen Chave Edwards who married 1851.(Don't know where the Clara comes from)
George Paradise 'remarried' in 1899 to Sarah Sanders in West bromwich.(Perhaps he and Geo.Philips mother were not married but just lived together.
Have been unbable to find 1st marriage or the death of a female Matthew around the age or area between 1885-1891.

George Paradise Matthew was single in 1881 living in Bull Street.

George Philip Matthew emigrated to Australia and served in the Army (see https://naa12.naa.gov.au/NameSearch/Interface/ItemDetail.aspx?Barcode=8216816). He married twice and raised a family in Aus. The above correspondents were correct - his mother appears to have been Henrietta (Hetty) Malin/Mallin/Mallen born in St Peter's Port, Guernsey about 1852 to William Mallen, blacksmith and Mary Ann, Nurse. No record has been found of a marriage to George Paradise Matthew or a death certificate but she must have died before the 1881 Census. George Paradise married Sarah Sanders in September 1899 and had three daughters, the youngest of which, Doris Elsie Matthew was my husband's paternal grandmother. George Philip was living with his father and Sarah, and his paternal grandmother, Helen Chave Matthew, in 1901 at 45 Hall Road, Handsworth, West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England. George Paradise Matthew died at Westcliffe-on-Sea 26th February 1929.

By the way, it is not clear where the 'Hamilton' middle name came from. He was born George Philip Matthew and the Hamilton appears on his enlistment documentation to the Australian Army. He may have emigrated via Canada and the name added then?

He was my great grandfather. He has surviving children, who would be half-siblings to James' friend. I am keen to hear from James if anyone is in touch.

Hi everyone. I've tried to send my email address to James a couple of times but I don't think it has worked. James, if you're reading this, it is terrimeganspence at bigpond.com -- just remove the spaces and replace the word "at" with the @ symbol.
