I lived in Oxford St, Stirchley, and know Mayvale road very well My grandmother worked at Cadburies before sh had my mom and used to put the patterns on the chocolates by hand using forks she was so skilled at i that Cadburis broke the rules of not employing women after they had given birth. she worked there for years until her death in 1947. as did many of my family. Joyce and Erric Marlow, Bill Bishop, And my late wife Shiela Napier and her brothers Ron Napier and Aurther Napier who lost his life flying typhoons over France on D-day +12

If anyone is interested I have a copy entitled A CENTURY OF PROGRESS OF CADBURU BOURNVILLE,1831-1931.and also TASCOS PAST AND PRESENT. I will bring them to the meet on Saturday if anyone wants to read them.

Hi lyn i think i got my roads mixed up. My aunt and uncle actually lived in lea house road....put it down to senile dementia.lol.

hi lyn .now i remember i used to walk up maryvale road to get to lea house road. would be interesting if your aunt knew the campkin family......

I am interested in Mary Vale Rd as on the 1901/1911 census I have found some REDDING relatives who were residing in this road...

1901 Mary Vale Road, Kings Norton. The head of the family was a packer of cocoa & chocolate...on the 1911 again at 256 Mary Vale Road,Bournville and still packing cocoa & chocolate....am I correct in assuming that this is the same Mary Vale Road as featured on the photo??? I have another member of this family living at 28 Mary Vale Rd on the 1901/1911 but the head of family is a maker of India Rubber...that doesn't really fit in with Cadbury's does it ??

Regards,
Margaret.

Not everyone in the area was employed by Cadbury's, though many were. I have been trying to put together a spreadsheet of the numbers and occupants of Pershore road (all of it) in the early years of the century, in as far as is possible. In many cases one or two members of the family will be working at Cadbury's, with others working at other establisments ( a screw works being particularly obvious with the ones i am examining at present). Wth regard to the india rubber maker, there was ( in 1904 & other years) a firm Capon Heaton & Co Ltd, Hazelwell Mills Stirchley listed as India Rubber manufacturers and also as cycle tyre manufacturers. This was the other side of the Pershore Road to its junction with mary Vale road, at the end of what would become Hazelwell road and what is now the Stirchley Trading Estate.

Hello Mike,
thanks for this info....Mary Vale Road on the 1901/1911 is in Kings Norton,Bournville & Stirchley in one instance, which confused me somewhat as I am not too familiar with that part of B'ham at all. I had always assumed that Bournville was built primarily for the Cadbury work force, but as you say not every member of each family will be working for cadbury's.
Thanks again,
Margaret.

When George Cadbury planned his village he decided (apparently not initially, but before any building was done) that bournville should not be just for Cadbury employees, in that he thought his ideas would be spread better if it was opne to outside people (with restrictions to control enterpreneurs and othe crooks). As many of the houses were sold, rather than rented, it would probably have been difficult to enforce a Cadbury-only policy anyway. No 256 Mary Vale is in the centre of the estate on the north side past Linden road. No 28, however seems to have been (on the north side) just by the railway line, between the railway line and Pershore road (though that part of pershore road was called stirchley st at that time). This was not part of the Bournville estate. Hope that's not too complicated.

the Cadbury family as you know were Quakers so no licenced premises were allowed on any of the estate's this is where at least 1 child in every house hold would to all looks and appearences played the violin or an instriment that needed a case then they were sent on thier travels some into stirchley to the out door to fill stone flaggons or bottles with beer and the old man could the have a drink after work. I still have one of the stone jars that was used for this job (all them violins and not a note played) Frothy being a bit of a heavy drinker would have his son play the accordion or a piano if it came in a case

I have the ordnance survey maps of 1903 for Lifford, Bournville,Stirchley if anyone wants them instant message me with thier E address and I will forward them to you

hi tiny...i see you mentioned an eric marlow..my dad had a friend keith marlow from over that way....just wondered if there was any connection...

Hi everyone

My mum and her family grew on on Maryvale Rd I believe. They were the Knowles family and the kids were Hazel, Geoff, Lynn, Philip and Kate.

I'm not sure which years they lived there, I will ask one of my aunts and let you guys know.

Very interesting to read about it

Li Lin No i don't think he is a relation as Eric was the only son Poss cousins though. He used to work in the cocoa block at Cadbury's his wife Joyce Marlow(Chance) also worked there and did for most of her working life until retirement.

I believe that the Reading house (256 Mary Vale Road) was bought c1962 by the Loder family. Knew them well as I lived at 274 from 1958

Wards owned the Radio shop on Bournville Green. Peggy Ward (Daughter) lived in Bournville Lane.
