Gunmaker's girl

Does anybody know how I can obtain some info about my gt grandfather Edward Marshall? His parents were William Marshall and Elizabeth Cade m.1836 in the parish church of Handsworth. Their children were: Joseph b. 1837, Edward b.circa 1838 ( not in indexes or baptismal records), William b. 1841, Sampson b. 1843. I have them all at Digby St, St Mary's Handsworth for all of the above births and on the 1841 census. After this the family moved down to East London whereby they had two further children, Reuben and John.

On all the census indexes Edward's birthplace is Birmingham, however he ( and his family) are missing from the 1861. I cannot find any trace of a birth or baptism for him. I've even had the thought that maybe he wasn't born a Marshall! I've tried substituting mother's maiden name too ...nothing! Any ideas - the family were gunmaker's and their father William was born In Stratford upon Avon c. 1816? Any help greatly appreciated. :)

Many thanks for that! I cannot find Edward anywhere though - by this stage he is married to Elizabeth and has a daughter also Elizabeth 1 years old I think. Thank you for looking. Regards Lorna

hi lorna, have you looked at the one in 1861 living willis st. aston

edward marshall aged 22 engine fitter b. kidderminster
mary a marshall 24 b. stourport worc.
charles e marshall 1 mth b. birmingham

as you said grandparents were born stratford on avon, kidderminster and stourport are close.

sorry ive just read that he married an elizabeth so i suppose this one is no good

there are a few "male marshall" born around the time of edwards birth so he is probably one of these where the parents hadnt decided on a name when registered.

I'd thought about that too, I think it's probably a case of applying for one of the male Marshall's certs ...could be expensive! Thank you all for looking. Regards Lorna

you could ask for male marshall with the parents you want. in that way you do not pay if its the incorrect one. birmingham register office will definitely do this for you.

Thanks - don't they charge a search fee then? I suppose even if they do it could be worth it after searching for so long!

i think if you give them a year plus or minus 2 yrs and parents names they will look at no charge
