Hello there,

I was wondering if someone would check for a marriage at St. Martin's between William Sparkes and Mary Ann Bromley on 18 Oct 1817.

Thank you,
Linda

hello linda,

18 oct 1817 william sparkes of this parish (widower) and mary ann bromley of this parish spinster. william sparkes signed with a cross. mary ann signed fully and the interesting thing is that it doesnt look like bromley. she has signed mary ann brumbley. there are two witnesses richard morne or norne, and elizabeth jane BRUMBLEY.

Many thanks, Shera!

I had no idea William Sparkes had been married before. And the spelling of Brumbley is interesting - not a very common name.

Thanks for your help.
Linda

thats great as it gives you the correct maiden name to try to trace. there is a previous marriage at st. martins which could be williams first marriage but cant be sure.

william sparkes of this parish bachelor and mary bissell of this parish spinster 24 oct 1803. william sparkes signed with a cross. witnesses ann allen and benjamin mansell or mansett.

Thanks so much for the additional information about the 1803 marriage. It may be William Sparkes but I'm not sure because later census records put his year of birth at about 1792, which would make him a bit young to marry in 1803. But - you never know - that birthdate could be wrong. In any case, it looks like I'm in for a lot more digging. . .

Thanks again,
Linda

ps. Are the St. Martin's records available at the Birmingham Library? I'm going to be in Birmingham in April and I would love to get copies of the original records, if such a thing is possible.
