Could anyone who has access to the records tell me if there is any detail about the marriage between James Allen and Mary Ann Hands : 13 November 1814. Trade of groom ? Anything in fact ?! Have previously asked for and got fantastic help about possible children of this marriage, now want to pin down occupation of James Allen. Many thanks.

there isnt the info you wanted but this is what there is

james allen of this parish bachelor and mary ann hands of this parish spinster. married by banns. both signed their full names and the witness was sarah beesley. (the other witness was a church official).

You are very astute ! Yes, that is almost certainly the same James but I don't think that it's the same Mary : I believe that he remarried a Mary Ann Evans 13 Oct 1823 at Aston Juxta. Basically I have been trying to find the father and mother of my ancestor Charles and today I pretty much confirmed it was James Allen and Mary Ann Hands. If the marriage between James and Mary Ann Hands had shown him as a gilt toy maker this would have clinched it. Anyway, as you kindly indicated no profession is shown on the record. Oh well !

if your charles allen was born 1815, this will be his christening at st. martins

charles allen son of james and mary allen b. 26 nov 1815 chr. 7 jun 1816

mary ann street fathers occ. gilt toy maker

Yes, I have Charles's age right, I'm pretty sure - censuses of 1841 and 1851 confirm it. I've accounted for the remaining Charles's born round this date and none of them were born to a James and Mary or James and Mary Ann. I've looked for a death for Mary Ann Hands/Allen but nothing has come up.

Here's another baptism found at St.Philips. Entry number 248 dated 1st September 1823. James, born 2nd August 1823 son of James and Mary Ann Allen. Abode Fleet Street. Father's occupation, Gilt toy maker.

Hi aimac21

Hope you are well.

I think we may be researching the same marriage here. From what I have found James Allen the gilt toy maker did indeed marry twice - both wives were called Mary Ann. This has caused me no end of trouble! He married the first about 1814, then he married the second in 1823.

I am descended through John James Allen - George Charles Allen - George Thomas Allen and my great grandmother Florence. I have information about the later Allens in my tree as my grandmother and I have been trying to uncover her maternal history as she knew nothing from her mother, who had claimed she was orphaned young (completely untrue!)

Perpetuum,

Delighted to see your post - I'd pretty much given up ! Equally pleased that you seem to confirm my findings. Would be happy to share what I have with you and discover anything new that you have found. Not sure if you realise that I'm descended from Charles' son, also a John James. A coincidence that alerted me in the first place.

Much look forward to hearing from you.
