Marriage licences for birmingham area - not certificates or parish records.

Brummie On Exmoor

I have read about this subject on other postings in this and other areas of the Forum, but I wonder if anyone can help me with a current position on this please.

I know that for all 'Warwickshire' bits of Birmingham, old Marriage Licences appear in the Bonds and Allegations held in Lichfield. For all 'Worcestershire' bits, they are held in Worcester. And I have had some great results when finding Bonds and Allegations in Worcester Archives. They have been really useful in helping to identify ancestors, back pre-Certificates in 1837 and before. They CAN provide helpful information regarding occupations, maiden names, relationships and relatives' names, amongst other facts.

I was wondering however, if anyone knows whether there are COPIES of the Birmingham/Warwickshire Bonds and Allegations in the new Library of Birmingham.

Many thanks for any help you can give.

For the information of others looking for Marriage Licences and Bonds (and I highly recommend them as excellent sources of additional information regarding early ancestors), here is the definitive reply from the Library of Birmingham. This reply to my email took 3½ weeks to arrive mind you!

"Thank you for your enquiry relating to pre-1837 marriage bonds.

I have checked our catalogues and we do not hold copies of these items, as you already state in your email the originals would be held at Lichfield.

We may have the odd marriage bond in some of our small deed collections but these are not comprehensive in any way. You can find our online catalogue here https://calmview.birmingham.gov.uk/CalmView/ and the search will function by bringing up any records which match."

However, WARNING! Don't forget that some original Birmingham stuff is in Lichfield, but some is in Worcester. So is some material from the county of Warwickshire. I have a Marriage that took place in Warwick, and the Licence is in Worcester.

Hope this helps people.
