Maggie gollies are deemed as not politically correct, so had to be removed from the jars in case they offended people!!

I think Robertsons use Paddington Bear as their mascot nowadays.
There were also figurines of gollies that could be collected, probably that is what you got for collected the stickers. My children all had them and one son in particular in his early years was very fond of his golly. None of them attached any racial connotations to it and none have grown up to be racially prejudiced. However, my eldest son, when a youngster, was not a fan of anyone with auburn or ginger hair. I gather that at one time many young girls loved to have a black doll: my wife had one when she was a child. Maybe it was a good thing: she is not prejudiced and we do have an Indonesian part in our family.

By the way you can still buy gollys in Paignton - and most likely other places as well. There is one on top of a wardrobe here.
