Malt Shovel, Newton Road Great Barr

ethanedwards

Brummie Muso
I used to be a regular here, for many years,
as I no longer live in the area, I wonder if anyone has any information and photographs etc?

I live up by the Scott Arms drove past the Newton last thursday from West Brom every thing looks O.K. from the outside don,t go in there myself but i believe it is still a popular pub. Dek:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

My late father used to drink there in the 1960's - was it an Ansells pub?

If I remember correctly it was Darby's,
then M&B.
The pub opposite the New Inns, then The Newton,
was Ansells.

John, I used to drink there in the 60's,
what was your Dad's name?

I grew up around here and it's a very popular carvery type pub but also has a busy lounge, it's still going strong and is always packed...

Dad's name was Percy. he would have been in his late forties, early fifties. However, it might have been a tad earlier, in the 'Darby' beer reign, as he positively loathed M&B! Where was Darby's ale brewed?

The pub might be at the end of this video

Thanks for posting Dave and yes it is!!

Here's some history I found about Darby's Brewery

Darby's Brewery Ltd
The Dunkirk Brewery operated by Darby's was based in Whitehall Road in Greets Green, to the west of Guns Village. Founded in 1894, the company enjoyed moderate growth by acquiring small scale breweries in the Black Country. Their tied estate numbered more than 100 public houses when they were taken over by Mitchell's and Butler's in 1951.

One such was Darby's Brewery Ltd. Charles Darby and his son George were beer sellers in West Bromwich by the late 1860s. About 1895 George Darby's son Charles took over the Bush inn, Claypit Lane, from his father. In 1900 he bought Dunkirk Hall in Whitehall Road and ran the Dunkirk inn in part of it. In 1902 he began to build a brewery next to the hall. By 1908 there were evidently eight breweries in West Bromwich, including Darby's newly built brewery in Whitehall Road. (fn. 88) In 1921 there were six breweries and two chemical manufacturers who apparently specialized in the production of brewers' finings. There were only three breweries in the town by 1940. (fn. 90) The industry had ceased to exist by 1970, one of the last breweries to survive being that of Darby's Brewery Ltd. which apparently closed during the 1950s.

Thanks John O,
I can't remember Percy!
