Malpass a Butcher at Shaftmoor Lane, Hall Green & Coventry Road, Small Heath

Does anyone remember a butchers shop belonging to Frederick Arthur James Malpass at 10 Shaftmoor Lane, Hall Green?

It appears he had a Greencrocers at 588 Kingstanding Road, Erdington at least 1947 & 1948.

Previously he had a butchers shop at 293 Coventry Road, Small Heath.

His father Arthur Malpass also had 1 and possibly 3 shops on Coventry Road at numbers 287, 293 & 387 from a period between 1912-1929.

Arthur married Charlotte Amelia Sidwell Jester and her father was a Butcher and may also have had a Butchers shop on Coventry Road.

Back to Frederick Arthur James Malpass and he was resident at Greenacres, Shutt Lane, Earlswood between at least 1939-1961 and at the time leading up to his death in 1988 was residing at 9 Summer Road, Acocks Green, Birmingham.

Arthur was my grandfathers brother. They were one of 15 children.
Frederick would be my fathers cousin.

I'd really like to find any descendants of Arthur and Frederick and I am sure that there is a daughter possibly of Frederick (not sure if Frederick had any siblings) who married someone with a surname of Spring and she may live in Cheshire.

If any of this information rings a bell with anyone I would love to hear fro you.

This may be of some interest to you. It is taken from Kelly’s directories. The years given below are the year of issue of the directory. The information is usually taken to refer to the year before (ie 1912 directory refers to 1911).

1912 and 1921 directory
Arthur Malpass 293 Coventry road in

1908 directory
No mention in 1908 directory of Arthur Malpass, though there was a Mrs Esther Malpass, grocer, at 1, Piddock st.
No mention in 1912 or 1921 of a butcher at either 287 or 387 Coventry road, but in the 1908 directory there were butchers at all 3 Coventry road addresses (287 George Frederick Davis; 293 James E Bladon ; 387 ½ Arthur Lester)
No butcher called Charlotte Amelia Jester , but was a butcher called Mrs Sarah Elizabeth Jester at 321 Nechells Park rd and a Sidney A.Jester, meat salesman of 68 City Meat Market

No malpass in directory

1949, 1950 , 1956 directory
Frederick Malpass (misprint as Malpress in both 1949 and 1950) Pork butcher, 10 Shaftmoor Lane

F.Malpass, butcher, 10 Shaftmoor lane
also Malpass R. S. shopkpr. 20 .St. Stephen's rd 29
588 Kinstanding road now Centra stores
