Makeshift Row, Handsworth

Hi Everyone,

I had an ancestor, William Squire, or Squires, who was listed as living at Makeshift Row in Handsworth in 1841, and I was wondering whether anyone knew anything about this area? It sounds to me like a temporary settlement? Could it be associated with the Soho works? At the time William's parents may have been a recent arrivals from Herefordshire.

Thanks!

hello and welcome clarxpi....what a fascinating address...i have not heard of it before but hopefully one or two of our members maybe able to dig up some info and maps for you....i will also see what i can find...do you know if your ancestor was still there on the 1851 census or had he gone by then

Hi Lyn,

Annoyingly he disappears until the 1861 census when the family reappears in Manchester. There is a mention in the 1851 census of a William Squires, which might be his father, but the dates don't match at all closely. I believe he was living in Sand Street, Birmingham in 1849

My search for him could only find one in Handsworth, in booth St. in 1841. Were you working from a transcription? If not perhaps you could show us a scan of the page, and we might be able to work out where the Row was from nearby addresses

This July 1878 advert places Makeshift Row on Booth Street, not far from the station. Viv.

Interesting that two threads recently started, Connection Street and Makeshift Row are both close to the GWR Station !

Yes I was looking for Makeshift Row and came across Connection Street, both roads I hadn’t heard of before. So decided to start a thread for Connection Street too. Both streets no longer exist, although they may have become part of another road or perhaps disappeared altogether with the development of Handsworth Station.

I wonder if Mikejee could help with a map please ? Viv.

Noting the comment that Makeshift Row and Connection Street could have had a new name at some time reminded me about the Soho Road/Street name change in another post.

Just north of Handsworth railway station and Handsworth Junction, Junction Road can be seen on older maps. Obviously the railway junction gave the road its name

There is no mention of Makeshift Row on the 1:500 1889 plan of around handsworth station. I think that it may well have disappeared by then
