We were staying a five star hotel in Majorca .the luxurious suite was magnificent. We'd flown over from Florida to spend a week with my wifes parents . One day we were waiting for the lift , behind us was a woman casually dressed with two children.We all entered the lift and I asked her what floor , she replied "the third floor please" A few days later she gave a press conference in the hotel foyer. She was the ex Empress of Iran Farah Diba and the widow of the late Shah.
The day finally came around for us to check out.When I recieved the bill it was in pesatas which equalled just over seven thousand pounds sterling. I asked for the bill to be in pounds which they kindly did .The amended bill figures were totally wrong and showed the botton line as just over seven hundred pounds ! a massive discount of ninety percent ! I pointed this discrepancy out to the cashier .They replied in very bad english that the bill was correct and they weren't in the habit of making mistakes ! We had a plane to catch so who was I to argue .We paid in cash , the account was settled and off we went to the airport , On arrival at Palma airport the whole place was on "lock down "Tanks police and soldiers were everywhere.Talk about paranoia this surely couldn't be for a mistaken hotel bill ! Eventually things became clearer. Terrorists had hijacked a jet . After sixteen long hours the siege was over and we were allowed to board and fly home.

What an interesting experience meeting Farah Diba in Majorca in 1982. She had left Iran with the Shah in January 1979. For a year they searched for permanent asylum and many governments were unwilling to let them within their borders. The Revolutioning Guard of Iran had ordered their arrest and death. They first went to Egypt and in October 79 were in Panama. They returned to Egypt in March 1980. After death of Shah she spent 2 years in Egypt where Anwar Sadat allowed her to stay in the Koubbeh Palace. In October 1981 she left Egypt and Regan said she was welcome in the US.

Thank you so much for your reply.I believe her two children in the lift were Leila Pahlavi & Ari Pahlavi.Both died sadly Leila over a drug overdose & Ari died of a self inflicted gunshot wound.I can only imagine their mother's & family's grief through the loss this family experienced. Queen Farah at the grand old age of eighty eight lives in Washington & Paris.
