There used to be a fabulous Pie shop near the corner of Gt Lister and Cromwell St.
Every Saturday me and my brother Robert used to go down and buy 5 or 6 pies to go with our chips on the night.
The kids had to cut them up of course as those Pies were shared among about 10 people, but no matter, I was only little then and half a Pie was more than I could really eat.
I remember they had big thick crusts that crumbled in your mouth and chunks of Beef that dribbled juice all down your chin (my wife says I still dribble but now it's because of age).
It was also one of the few times all the family sat together and usually as we all finished Dad would toddle off down to the Pub.
I loved Saturday nights back then, we were all scrubbed and pink ..(courtesy of our old tin bath)..my tummy was full, and in Winter we had a roaring log or coke fire and any of us still hungry toasted Pikelets on the open range.
In the other room we'd hear Norma and Johnny playing to death whatever 45 they'd managed to buy that week..
We'd be watching Popeye with 'The Bosun' and then Torchy the battery boy...(never knew I was destined to marry bloody Miss Bossy Boots)
Laughter would ring throughout the house...our place back then was the meeting point for all the rest of the family as they popped in before carrying on to the Pub.
Mom even went out a few nights a month with my Aunts May and Eva.
There they were, all toffed up with new coats with the fur collars...triplets on parade...and off they went down to the Royal Oak where they sat either in the Smoke room or the snug..
Dad and my other Uncles would send drinks through all evening long..for Mom it was Mackeson, for Aunty May it was Bitter shandy and Aunt Eva as always was on the Brandy..
Pub closing time in those days was about 10.30 pm..I never heard them come home though..a full tummy always made me feel sleepy back then..a legacy I still carry today.
I do know this though..
When I awoke early Saturday morning I flew downstairs as I knew Dad had brought me home a selection of comics..
I had Marvelman, Superman, Casper the Ghost and a couple of westerns..
