Looking For Information On Stamford Or Stanfield

Boatwoman

knowlegable brummie
Hi I am researching my family on my mothers side and I am stuck.
My Great Grand-father William John George Harris married a Rose Ellen Stamford or Stanfield. Rose was born about 1881 in Aston, Birmingham. They married about 1903.
I would appreciate any help offered.

Ellen Stanfield (nee Wilkins) death registered Dec qtr 1890, Aston and she was buried 17 Dec 1890.

Ellen Wilkins birth registered possibly Jun qtr 1859, Aston (there's another birth Jun 1858). Daughter of John Wilkins & Hannah Badkin (John's second marriage).

John & Hannah were married 18 Sep 1853, St Martin Bham...

There are a few birth registrations for a George Stanfield of about the right time. Two in Bham, Dec qtr 1854 & Mar qtr 1857, and one in Aston, Mar qtr 1856. As his birth is listed as Aston on one census I'd favour that one but can't be sure.

It also makes it difficult to pick him out in the censuses prior to the one's in post #2. Finding his father's name from his marriage could help with that.

MWS. I am sending you a huge THANK YOU. You are a complete and utter star. I have not used family search before, but will definitely use it now. All the other sites want you to spend a fortune. I will give this one a go though.
Thank you so much for all your effort. :-)

Hi MWS.
At some point Rose must have married William John George Harris. Because Joseph Harris was born in 1910. She would have been 22 in 1903.

Despite searching I am having no luck with finding any information on William John George Harris. This side of the family seems to be a complete mystery. I would of thought I could of found something online. Or maybe I am just not searching correctly?

Unfortunately Harris is gonna be more difficult to trace.

On the 1911 census his birth is listed as 1882 Birmingham and on the 1939 register his dob is listed as 25 Feb 1882.

There no William John George Harris registered but there is a William John Harris registered Jun qtr 1882, Aston. I wouldn't get too hung up on look for an exact match. There are other William John Harris registered within a couple of years but the 1882 seems the strongest possibility.

However, tracing him in the censuses is difficult because there are other William Harris listings and none have a middle name listed so the only certainty is the 1911 when he is living with Rose.

There doesn't seem to be any church record listed for the marriage online, which could mean they were married at a church where the records haven't been transcribed yet or at the register office. So your options would be to go to the library and search for the marriage (time consuming) or order the certificate. From that you should get his father's name and other information which will help.

Certificates are available from the Bham register office or from the GRO. Less than £10 the last time I bought one.

found this entry could it be your family?
1911 , No.7 Thimblemill Lane, Aston
William G Harris age 49 , b Birmingham Tube worker.
Rose Harris age 29 b Birmingham
Rose Harris age 9 b Birmingham (believe this is Rose Ellen Stanfield , Dec 1901)
George Harris age 4
Joseph Harris age 1.
Where William puts the age details he has written in the female column first and it looks like 50
then he crosses it out and puts ?9 in the correct column(can't make it out) and then underneath 49.
Although he puts William G when he signs the entry at the end it looks like William J.

Alberta. Many thanks. This is indeed my family. I looked back and found the Thimblemill Lane address. So a huge thank you. I am getting closer to knowing him.
