Lodge Family 1814+

Hello, this is my first post on the forum. I'm finding out more about my Lodge family. William Lodge, a Stone and Marble mason came from Liverpool around 1814 or just after when he was about 48. He was married to Ann and he ran the Islington Marble works in Islington/Broad St until 1824 when he died, and his wife Ann took over. William had 2 sons from a previous marriage - John (who went to NZ in 1839) and William, who continued the Marble mason business when Ann abdicated (she had a royal way about her, from the advertisements!) in 1846. Does this family seem familiar to anyone? I'd love to find a fellow researcher!! Cheers.

Hi familysleuth, welcome to the forum. I'm not a fellow researcher for the Lodge family but I took a look on the British Newspaper Archive (which you may likely have a subscription to as you mention 'advertisements') and found a notice in the Birmingham Gazette for Mon 16 Aug 1824 wherein Ann Lodge expresses her intention to carry on the business of her late husband.

Also a piece dated Mon 07 Oct 1844 where William Lodge is named defendant against a William Hunt, plaintiff, on a "List of Parties who are entitled to receive Unclaimed Moneys in the hands of the Commissioners of the Court of Requests".

Then, in Marriages, Birmingham Gazette, Mon 11 Oct 1841: "On Thurs last, at St Thomas's Church, in this town, by the Rev Mr Collisson, the Rev Charles Rawlings, Wesleyan Minister, of Shrewsbury, to Sarah Ellen, daughter of the late Mr William Lodge, statuary, of this town".

Hope some of this may be new to you. Ed.

thankyou! - that's a rich source and I have all of the information, including accounts of William snr's bankruptcies (Ann had no problems apparently running the business, but as soon as her son William took over, he too, had issues ). I think too, that Ann is buried in Key Hill - her daughter Jane (Wilson) is buried there and I am awaiting on information that may help me establish a link between her and Robert Lodge, (he could be a son) a successful grocer in the same street, who is also buried in Key Hill. So far I have not found anyone else with this family in common, and I would love to share information with them. A reason they are a little hard to find is I believe the family were Dissenters - Wesleyan Methodists - and some records are not on line. I'm new at family history, but gradually finding my way around! Would anyone know how I could source apprenticeship or guild records for stone and marble masons?

Thanks for your welcome, the forum looks really interesting!

There is a book "UK Midland and Various UK Trade Directories 1790 - 1941. This should be available at your local library

Thankyou Harry. I will see if the WA Genealogy Society holds it - I am posting from Perth, Australia. very likely the State Library has it. I have found 7 references to them in various trade directories already. Best wishes.
